Read to Recharge: Library Council Hosts Annual Library Day 2025

Reviewed by Kanish Krishnapradeep (Curator, Library Council, TCK)

The Annual Library Day of the Library Council of Trinity College was held on 14 October 2025, marking another milestone in the College’s ongoing journey of fostering reading, creativity, and holistic development.

This year’s event was organised under the theme “Read to Recharge”, highlighting the value of reading for mental well-being. Staying true to the Council’s vision of thinking beyond the bookshelf, the Library hosted a range of activities designed to spark creativity and critical thinking among students. These included Book Talks, Short Story Writing, Book Reviews, Digital Story Creation, Bookmark Design, Speech Competitions, and Mini Research Projects. Each activity reflected the enthusiasm and talent of young Trinitians, making the occasion a memorable one.

The proceedings began with an opening address by the Chief Curator, Master Udantha Jayasinghe, who warmly welcomed the gathering and spoke about the Library’s evolving role in supporting learning at the College. He described its growth over the years from a simple room of books into a vibrant space where students share ideas and explore new interests.

His speech also took the audience on a nostalgic journey through past initiatives such as Human Library Day 2018Coffee Talk WebinarsLiterary Melodies, and Library Day 2023. Drawing from his personal experience, he reflected on his tenure as Chief Curator and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of serving in such a respected role.

Following his address, the winner of the Book Talk competition, Master Chandula Senasinghe, delivered his presentation, showcasing the creativity and analytical thinking of young readers. The audience then listened to an insightful keynote address by the Chief Guest, Dr Sajeewana Amarasinghe, Consultant Psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health and immediate Past President of the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists.

A proud Trinitian and former Chief Curator of the Library Council (1989), Dr Amarasinghe delivered a thought-provoking talk on “Stress and Coping in Teenagers”. His presentation offered valuable guidance on managing academic pressure, cultivating resilience, and practising mindfulness. His message, which emphasised the importance of balancing ambition with emotional well-being, resonated deeply with both students and staff.

The first set of awards followed the keynote address, after which Master Sureshkumar Dilrukshan, winner of the Speech Competition, captivated the audience with his inspiring words that reflected the intellectual spirit of the Council.

Another highlight of the day was the inaugural Intra-School Rev. A. G. Fraser Portrait Art Competition, organised by the College Archives in collaboration with the Library Council. This new initiative encouraged students to express their creativity through art, with the winners recognised during the second round of awards in appreciation of their skill and effort.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a token of appreciation was presented to the Chief Guest, followed by the Vote of Thanks delivered by the Secretary of the Library Council, Master Menath Kahapola. Gratitude was also extended to the College Executive Council, the Director of the Trinity College Co-Curricular Enrichment Initiative, Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, and the Teacher-in-Charge of the Library Council, Mrs. Achala Illangakoon, for their continued support and encouragement.

The Library Council continues to stand as one of the College’s most integral societies, fostering learning, creativity, and curiosity among students. Through its steadfast efforts, it remains committed to nurturing a love for reading and keeping the flame of knowledge alive within the Trinity community.
