Reviewed by Nimuthu Pathiraja (PROMWEB)   When the “T150 Project” was launched two years ago in recognition of Trinity’s Sesquicentennial anniversary, “The Trinity History project” was undoubtedly a key part of its’ celebrations. Highlighting the importance of celebrating a significant past, many committed, grateful and dedicated heads got together to successfully produce “The Trinity Story” in paperback and digital versions, rekindling Trinity’s unprecedented legacy.  The historic moment was witnessed by many dignitaries including his Lordship the Bishop, the Board of Governors, The College Executive Council and Old boys. Therefore, in this years’ presentation of the Fraser Memorial Oration, a programme launched at celebrating Trinity’s excellence through the great Visionary principal, Mr. Alexander Garden Fraser.  The key-note speaker of this years’ rendition of the Fraser Memorial Oration was none other than the man behind the Trinity History Project, Mr. M.V. Muhsin. Mr. Muhsin, being a proud Trinitian was the winner of the illustrious Ryde medal in 1962 and he was the senior prefect in 1963. After he left his alma mater, he started off as a chartered accountant. He managed to rise up the ranks soon, becoming a Group Director of Zambia’s mining conglomerate. Later he was appointed to the prestigious position of Vice President and Chief Information Officer at the World. Mr. Muhsin’s service to Trinity has truly been unprecedented. Mr. Mushin was who funded Trinity’s first IT Network and he is the founding patron of the TCK Washington OBA. He contributed with instrumental influence and effort to bring the “Trinity Story” to life by both funding this initiative entirety and taking up the key role of executive chair.  It would be fair to state that Mr. Muhsin took us on a tour along the schools’ history during his speech. He shared some delightful stories of the past along with descriptions about the great members of staff we had in the past. His speech was truly inspiring, and we are forever grateful for his outstanding tales. Mr. Muhsin managed to paint a picture in our young minds, of how great a personality Mr. Alexander Fraser was.   Next, within a historically significant moment in our history, the first copy of the “Trinity Story” was handed over to the Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB. Following this, in another feat the new college digital history website was launched. The website was pioneered with the leadership of Dr. Romesh Ranawana. The winner of the Coveted Amunugama award, he currently serves as the Group Chief of Analytics and AI Officer at Dialog Axiata PLC and serves as the Chairperson of the National Committee on Artificial-Intelligence Strategy. The new digital website is an unparalleled commemoration of our history through technology. From Virtual-Reality tours to a complete archive of our prize lists, it is a work of art, none of this would have been possible without the leadership of staff members, the PROMWEB and the 50-student task force. Importantly, all of the proceeds of the “Trinity Story” will directly be provided to the College Archives. Truly immortalising Trinity’s legacy.  The Digital History website can be viewed at https://history.trinitycollege.lk   Afterwards, a Q & A session was held with the aim of increasing interaction in our history. Then, Tokens of Souvenirs were presented to Mr. M.V. Muhsin, Dr. Romesh Ranawana and Mr. Arjuna Ranawana for their outstanding dedication and commitment. The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Master. Abidh Jameel, The senior prefect.  I think it is fair to state that this event successfully embodied our college’s legacy, and created resources to preserve our alma mater’s proud history for upwards of another 150 years. None of this would have been possible, however, without the contributions of many. We must thank the Executive director of the project, Mr. M.V. Muhsin, the Architect of the website Dr. Romesh Ranawana, the lead writer and editor Mr. Arjuna Ranawana. The College Executive Council including Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, Vice Principal Mr. Krishanthan Anthonydas, Co-Vice Principal Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, Ms. Thilini Sumanasekara for her contributions from the archives,  All members of staff, including Mr. Sheshan Abeysekara and Mr. Shevantha De Silva from the PROMWEB, who played a pivotal role in creating the Digital Website. We must also thank the 50-student task force who went to great lengths to make this initiative a success and everyone else who made this programme a resounding success.  The following are the names of the THP Publication team,   THP Publication Team  Trinity History Project Steering Committee: Rev. STC Tops Trinity in Football

Reviewed by Rehan Anandakumar (Web Content Team)  The annual football encounter;TCK vs  S. Thomas’ College Mt Lavinia unfolded at the Digana Sports Complex on November 11th, 2023.  Both A&B teams of U14 and U16 age categories competed at this event.   The highlight of the tournament was the showdown between the 1st XI competing for one of the prestigious trophies of the season.  The day kicked off with the U14 A team clash, with both the teams displaying their formidable skills. Despite the struggle, Trinity unfortunately lost the game with a match score of STC 3 /TCK 0. This match ended with STC leading with 5-0.  Next was the U16 A team match which was one of the fiercest matches until the final five minutes. There were no goals from both the teams, yet S. Thomas’ clinched a goal in the final minute, winning the match. However, the U16 B team managed to draw out their match with the scoreboard remaining at 0-0.  Then was the most anticipated 1st XI match which lived up to expectations with both the teams delivering a spectacle of equally competitive skills. The audience witnessed nail biting moments with the ball knocking on the side bars few inches away from the goal post.  To make the match more intense, it started to rain heavily, yet the play didn’t stop and finally S Thomas sealed their victory by scoring a last-minute goal with a match score of 1-0.  At the awarding ceremony, S. Thomas 1XI team was crowned the champions for the year 2023. The annual football encounter between Trinity College and St. Thomas’ is once again highlighted in the sporting calendar leaving fans looking forward to the friendly rivalry encounter of 2024.   A sincere thank you to the Principal Rev. Reviewed by Yeshan Ranatunga (Web Content Team)  The scene was set, it was supposed to be a walk in the park, but it was a run chase that never had left the crowd in awe. In the end the lions managed to roar the loudest at the Under 19 All Island Division 1 Tier A Inter-School Limited Overs Tournament 2023 by winning back-to-back titles.  In August 2023, the Trinity Cricketers passed on their journey to defend their remarkable 2022 victory in the U19 Division 1 Tier A Limited Overs Tournament. Master Manula Kularathne, serving as the captain, played a pivotal role in the 2022 season and was determined to ensure that their success continued. With the backing of his teammates, they initiated their campaign with the goal of securing a consecutive victory in the limited overs tournament.  The Trinitians didn’t have their expected full side with the absence of their skipper Manula Kukarathne. Representing the Sri Lanka U19 side on a tour to Pakistan, skipper Manula Kularathne was unable to take part in the opening matches of the tournament. However, it was not a failure when the experienced Trinity in-stand captain Dinusha Peiris led the Trinity side to get into the knockout rounds, in which they looked on towards on what a repeat of their famous 2022 season would be.   The Knockouts  After defeating Mahanama College, Colombo by 8 wickets in the Quarters with the support of skipper Manula Kularathne’s 3-fer and Dinusha Pieris’s unbeaten knock of 78, Trinity advanced themselves into the semi-finals to face off against the mighty Royalists.   An anticipated contest was disturbed by rain, but thanks to an amazing century by Sri Lankan youth cap Supun Waduge and a DLS win by 10 runs meant that Trinity was just one shot away from going back-to-back!   One Final Push  The Thurstan College Grounds took centre stage as Trinity was to face St. Joseph’s College Colombo in a thrilling final on the 21st of November. A ground which would bring back fond memories for the Trinitians as a year ago when they managed to capture the title in the 2022 season. It was no surprise that Trinity was running high on confidence and going into the final with high ego spirits to create history at the Thurstan College Grounds.    Winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Trinity bowlers kept ticking off every St. Josephs batsmen who’d walk into the crease. One by one Trinity kept turning out wickets at regular intervals and just didn’t let the Josephians get the game going into their hands. A slight scare as a 47-run partnership was building for the 7th wicket, but Tharana Wimaladharama got the key wicket of his opposite number and as the wickets kept tumbling down, Trinity managed to get the Josephians all out for a modest total of 135.     The Sri Lankan Youth Cap Tharana Wimaladharama ended up with figures of 3-22 in 9 overs supported by the 2 left arm orthodox bowlers in Dinuka Tennakoon and Malith Rathnayake scalping 2 wickets each. While skipper Manula Kularathne and right arm leg-spinner Jayavi Liyanagama got a wicket each.   Thrills and Spills – a Rollercoaster Ride    It is a known fact that cricket is a funny game and no matter what situation in the game you may be in, there is always a chance that play can favour even those in desperate times. In what would be a simple run chase under normal circumstances to score 136 runs in 50 overs, it was never ever an easy run chase. And what we were treated to next; left the crowd in awe.    As the Trinity openers Viduka Dhammage and Vathila Udara set onto the field, the stage was set. The supporters cheering on in the background, hundreds of live telecast viewers, it was an absolute perfect way to start a run chase. But the Josephians thought otherwise, and a first ball duck for Viduka Dhammage caused everything to just pause…   With a pumped up start from the Jospehians, they never looked back as Trinity lost 4 wickets for just 43 runs on the board. With Trinity requiring 93 runs with just 6 wickets to spare, there were no favourites at this point. It was anyone’s game. Trinity needed something special.   Skipper Manula Kularathne and Supun Waduge had all eyes on them as they were against a pumped-up St. Joseph’s side, by the start they got. But with the cool and calm nerves of both batters, they built an important 56 run partnership for the 5th wicket, which settled the dressing room until Manula Kularathne was caught at point at which point Trinty was 99 for 5.   With just another few more runs required with sufficient wickets in hand, it seemed that the rest would just be a walk in the park for in form batsman Supun Waduge who passed his all-important half-century. But just a few overs later Supun Waduge found himself lofting the ball right into the hands at long on departing for a magnificent knock of 60 and Rajindu Thilakarathne getting bowled in his second ball found Trinity at 111 for 7.   A Rise to the Occasion!  The tension was high. Everything was on the line. What looked like would be a good run chase for the Trinitians already found themselves in a spot of bother. But Jayavi Liyanagama and Tharana Wimaladharama stepped to the occasion and scored a valuable partnership of 22 which made Trinity just 3 runs shy. Although Tharana Wimaladharma found himself getting bowled, it was Dinuka Tennakoon who had a moment to savour by hitting the winning runs with a six to make Trinity to go back-to-back in the Division 1 Tier A Limited Overs Tournament!   An eventful day with all kinds of emotions finally concluded. And the lions found themselves victorious once more defending their title at the Thurstan College Grounds.   Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the tireless efforts and unwavering dedication of the coaching and support staff, under the

The event was held at the Royal Central College Polonnaruwa grounds from the 29th of October to the 1st of November.  The tournament kicked off with an outstanding run in the group stages, where Trinity remained unbeaten with 3-0 victory against Vijaya College Matale, followed by another pleasing win against Richmond College Galle with the same scoreline. The group stage triumph was sealed with the final score of a 2-0 victory against Nalanda College Colombo.  The most challenging and the match which built much suspense was the pre-quarterfinals where they faced last year’s cup champions, Zahira College Matale. The match was nothing but a rollercoaster ride. At the end of the first half, Zahira had led with 1- 0. However, in a sudden twist of fate in the second half when bad light interrupted the play, the match paused midway.   When the match resumed the next day, with more competition from both teams, Trinity managed to level the score at 1-1, ending the match with a one-all draw, driving both teams in a penalty shootout where TCK displayed their skills by scoring all five points, while Zahira college fell short with just four points. The match was a hard-battled victory that tossed Trinity to the quarterfinals.  In the quarter finals, TCK engaged in a fierce battle against Ananda College Colombo. The match moved with no points until the last minute where Ananda College secured a goal through a short corner, closing the screens for Trinity with a score of 1 – 0.  Despite the challenges and the setbacks, team TCK got back in the field showing remarkable resilience in the semi-finals against Prince of Wales Moratuwa, winning the match 2-1 securing their spot in the plate finals, where they faced their parallels from the seaside, S. Thomas College Mount Lavinia.   The match kicked off with a dark cloud in the blue sky and a deluge.  With fate at its best, the organisers were hesitant in resuming the match, and made an astonishing decision to crown both Trinity and St. Thomas as joint plate champions.  Trinity’s journey towards this unforgettable and challenging battle was stuffed with nail biting moments to incredible displays of resilience.   Our sincere thanks go to the coachers M.Rifas and M.Ashraf for their determination to sculpt the team into the plate champions of the Inter School Hockey Tournament 2023  The Trinity College Team  Rayyan Marzookdeen, Yenuka Rathnayake, Menod Koralegedara, Menul Dissanayake, Abeesha Wickramasinghe, Dulitha Karunarathne, Ahmed Farveez , Sadew Yapa, Lakshan Jayawardane, Pinitha Manajina, B.Gogulnath, Mohomed Harun, Bilal Bin Azaad, Mihin Nawarathne, Matheesha Gamage, Thanish Umer, Salim Bin Azaad, Asama Ranwala, Minuka Bandara, Inodh Koralegedara.

TM Mohamed Yasir, who is among the best toastmasters in Kandy, conducted this session from 2.30pm onwards, inspiring all the young gaveliars who took part. He excels in the field of teaching, by profession, and has been a Toastmaster since 2018. He is also the immediate Past Division Director of Division F (2022-2023) of Toastmasters International.  Public speaking and communication skills are among the most basic and most important skills for any individual to possess to successfully work in society. At Trinity, students are highly encouraged and taught how to improve or develop on these skills. The Gavel Club is the gateway to the majestic world of speaking and leadership. To further assist with the development of the gaveliars, this workshop was held targeting speech evaluation, which is a key area in which the committee has identified the club members to be weak in.  The session commenced in the auditorium with Mrs. Thilanka Niyangoda, the Teacher-in-charge, and 25 gaveliers. It was an engaging and interactive session that encouraged active participation from of attendees.  All club members who attended this session provided good feedback and expressed how much of an impact it had made on their career in general. Chaniru Senhas, Rehan Anandakumar and Nahidh Naseem report.  We are thrilled to share our experience as participants in the “Creating Solutions for Impact,” a competition co-organized by the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) and the University of Queensland, Australia (UQ).  The 2023 edition unfolded over four weeks, starting on the 5th of October, featuring a series of workshops and concluding with the Grand Finale on the 2nd of November at the SLIIT Campus in Malabe. Our journey was graced by the presence of various professors from the Engineering and IT faculties of the University of Queensland, along with some from SLIIT, who served as the judges of this competition.  The kick-off was marked by an insightful masterclass on “How to sell an idea to an investor,” presented by a UQ professor. Following this, armed with newfound knowledge and individualized assistance, we dove into the competition.  From the get-go, we were tasked with identifying an environmental problem and crafting a sustainable solution with a positive impact on the planet. Guided by weekly workshops, facilitated by seasoned professionals, we navigated each step of the programme, gathering knowledge that we believe extends far beyond the competitive context. The culmination of our efforts took place at the Grand Finale, where we pitched our idea to the judging panel as if we were seeking investment.  We picked a common student problem: Teachers struggle to find students with the right skills for school club activities.   Our solution? A website application called “Edu-Link” where students make profiles showcasing their achievements and talents. Teachers can easily find suitable students to give them the right opportunities to engage in school activities.   EduLink – Presentation by Chaniru Senhas, Rehan Anandakumar and Nahidh Naseem At the Grand Finale, we – Nahidh, Chaniru, and Rehan – won the “People’s Choice Award.” People voted for us, and besides certificates, we got a pair of Apple Airpods Pro. It added a GenZ touch to our well-deserved victory. We are looking forward to what comes next.  Cheers to teamwork and making positive changes in the world through education and technology!

Zooming in on a Zen Invention

Landscaping in alliance with nature, is a gift for humanity. It is more invaluable when children are exposed to the wonder of the quiet serenity of a miniature Zen Garden. Honouring the concept of 2023 as the ‘Year of Collaboration’, and blending the essence of meditation and nature, the students of both Upper and Middle School of TCK rallied around their Japanese teacher Mrs W.M.R. Kumari, to transform a dull, unused spot in front of the Rev. Wickramasinghe Building and the canteen, into a Zen Haven. Pre and post captures speak a voluminous story of sustainable living, collaboration and commitment of both students, teacher, a few parents and two conscientious gardeners. The initial task was to pave the ground area under the mango tree, filling and flattening it with earth, and surrounding it with granite blocks. Later, narrow rock paths with a granite bridge were constructed. Rocks and stones are salient elements in any Japanese Zen Garden: larger rocks may symbolise islands and water, while raked gravel dotted with strategically placed stones represent flowing water. The ‘hashi’ or bridge constructed is symbolic of the crossing between the mortal world and afterlife allowing one to rid oneself of worldly burdens and experience inner peace, becoming one with nature. The happy team included a little asymmetrical pond: a fundamental element of human existence, at the corner of this little paradise. Plants were placed in several locations of the garden. These will grow and blossom to add an authentic lustre to the Zen theme. Trinity College is grateful to the Japanese Culture Society and its MIC Mrs Rathna Kumari for creating a vibrant masterpiece that adds life and beauty to the Middle School.

Review by Nimuthu Pathiraja (Web Content Team)  The 20th of October 2023 was unquestionably an evening full of entertainment and a chance for 164 young artists from Grade 1 to present their talents to an audience that left the hall with so many memories to cherish. After weeks of planning and training, curtains finally opened for this concert, themed ‘One Moment’.  After an auspicious start with the opening prayer, lighting of the oil lamp and the welcome speech, the event headed off to a vibrant “Pooja Dance” that entertained the audience to the rhythmic beats of Kandyan Dance.  Next was an English drama titled “Back to School,” and acted out by a group of enthusiastic students who had been on the training track for a long time. The English song “Fun and Leisure” which proceeded the drama was surely what the name illustrates – a deeply knowledgeable and yet amusing event.   Highlighting multilingualism, the theme changed to the Sinhala Song “පාවෙලා යන්න”  providing an experience like no other on the wonders of childhood, which undoubtedly filled everyone with nostalgia.  The young artists then presented a song in both Sinhala and Tamil titled, “Life Lessons”: The idea for a song like this was derived from the Ideology of teaching vital life lessons at an early age, providing children with the opportunity of becoming responsible citizens.  “Dancing Feet” a Tamil Dance Item was another example of a great display for another key discipline: Dancing. It was a precious and delightful performance.  The Sinhala Drama “මං ආසයි” was a masterpiece of dramatic acting. This was followed by an orchestral: “වලාකුළේ.”  All the instruments were made out of waste material to achieve the objectivie of inspiring future generations to reduce the wastage of resources and creating a more greener world.   According to the agenda the event was to be done and dusted, however, there was a twist – A special surprise song “One Moment” which was a collaboration of everyone involved – After this performance, Mr. Ananda Marasinghe addressed the gathering encouraging more glorious performances – This brought an end to a wonderful event.  The entire concert was a culmination of commitment, collaboration and a love for a job well-done. The students and teachers can be proud of their achievements.   We would like to thank the Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, the Vice Principal Mr. Krishanthan Antonydas, the Co-Vice Principal Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, The Headmistress of the Junior School Mrs. C.P.K. de Tissera, the Grade Head of Grade 1 Mrs. Himali Mulleriyawa, All the Grade 1 teachers, The Aesthetics Faculty and all the other teachers from the Kindergarten and the Junior School who made it possible for this junior most grade to hone their skills on the stage and build up confidence, the Junior School Office, PROMWEB, IT Department, Security officers, College press and the support staff must also be mentioned for their support through the event.   Junior School is also grateful to the parent community for their support in making this event a remarkable one to be cherished!

Cub Scouts on a Camp Out

Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas (Web Content Team)  The Annual Cub Scouts’ Camp Out, held exclusively for Grades 4&5, was on the 20th and 21st of October 2023. 22 Grade 5 Cubs stayed overnight in a Grade 5 classroom (accompanied by 2 ‘akelas’). They were joined by 19 Grade 4 Cubs on the 2nd day of the campout.  The main events of the first day of the camp initiated after the evening tea, when the Cubs prepared themselves for the program “Red Flower”, which is a similar activity to a campfire. Each Cub enlightened the evening with songs, dances and dramas. They then slept at school after having their dinner.  The second day of the campout was brought to an energetic start by a PT session, which was followed by a visit to ‘Degaldoruwa’ Temple, with the Grade 4 Cubs. 6 ‘akelas’ accompanied the students on this visit which was extended to Trinity Eco Learning Arena (TELA) and the Victoria Reservoir. They then received the opportunity to roast marshmallows on sticks, a traditional camping activity.  The Cubs returned from TELA in the evening after lunch. A thank you goes to the akelas who accompanied the scouts throughout the journey and Mrs. Shalindra Dissanayake, the Teacher-in-charge of Cub Scouting.
Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas (Web Content Team) The students of two Grade 5 classes had the privilege of visiting the Kandy General Post Office, where they were given the chance to explore the office and learn the basic procedures, from the 17th to the 20th of October 2023, as part of their academic activities. Embarking on this enlightening visit, students were presented with a unique opportunity to delve deep into the intricate workings of Sri Lanka’s Postal Service. They set out on a journey to not only gain knowledge but to truly immerse themselves in the world of postal operations. This experience allowed them to witness firsthand how dedicated postal workers skilfully navigate the complex web of postal deliveries. Moreover, the visit served as a window to a captivating realm of philately, providing students with invaluable insights into the fascinating universe of stamps. As they explored the postal service’s inner workings, they unravelled the significance of stamps, discovering the stories, history, and culture embedded in these tiny pieces of art. The provision of this enriching experience for grade 5 students was made possible because of the unwavering dedication of Mrs. Indira Bandara, the Teacher-in-Charge of the Junior School Stamp Club, and the support of Mr. Amila Perera (an Old Boy of TCK).
