In the recently concluded U17 Division 1 Cricket Tournament, the spotlight was on skipper Dimantha Mahavithana, whose batting prowess stole the show with a sensational display of skill and determination.  In a build-up that led to the Quarter Finals, Dimantha Mahavithana etched his name into cricket history during the match against Bandaranaike College Gampaha, with an astounding double century, comprising an impressive 23 boundaries and 7 sixes, at the Sri Lanka Army Singha Regiment Ground at Ambepussa. This monumental score left spectators in awe, as he not only set a new record for the highest individual score in the Under 17 Competition, but also secured his position as the highest run-scorer for the team. His incredible tally of 387 runs at an average of 64.5,  showcased his exceptional form and dedication.  Throughout the season, the Trinity U17 Division 1 team unveiled a collection of standout performances, which eventually led them to the coveted semifinals of the tournament. A key figure in this journey was Chaniru Senaratne, whose all-round excellence earned him the distinction of being the team’s top wicket-taker with an impressive 11 scalps. Notably, Senaratne also flaunted his batting prowess by notching a century during one of his innings.  Adding to the team’s success, top-order batsman Pulisha Thilakarathne delivered a standout performance by scoring a century, contributing significantly to the team’s overall tally of 247 runs for the season and securing the position of the second-highest run-scorer. The left-arm orthodox bowling duo of Ammar Manzil and Kanilka Anthony also played a pivotal role by consistently spinning a spectacular a web against every opponent. Together, they tallied a commendable 13 wickets, cementing their place as crucial assets for the team’s bowling lineup.  Trinity College extends its heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated coaching and support staff led by Mr. Naveen Ekanayake,  supported by Mr. Lakshitha Alahakoon. Their guidance and expertise undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping the team’s success.  Once again, we wholeheartedly congratulate the U17 Division 1 Team on their exceptional journey, and we reserve a special commendation for Dimantha Mahavithana for inscribing his name in the annals of cricketing history with his remarkable performance that will be remembered for years to come.  Trinity U17A Squad: Dimantha Mahavithana (C), Pulessha Thilakaratne, Kavindu Jayaratne, Aadham Hilmy, Viduneth Dhammage, Ammar Manzil, Mahendra Abeysinghe, Sethmika Seneviratne, Sajana Weerasekara, Chaniru Senaratne, Ashwin Herath, Malika Vithanage, Ranul Gunarathna, Dinal Fernando, Kanilka Anthony
In the hill country of Sri Lanka, where the lush greenery of Kandy blends with the soul-stirring rhythms of the cascading Mahaweli, another musical extravaganza awaits unfolding. Prepare to be swept away by a musical feast like no other, as the Oriental Music Society [ OMS ] of Trinity College presents “Theevra” – a celebration of melody and music. This most anticipated event is scheduled to take place on the 9th of September at the National Institute of Co-operative Development (NICD) Polgolla, promising an unforgettable evening of musical fusion. “Theevra,” the Sinhala equivalent to “Intense”, encapsulates the essence of what this musical show aspires to convey. Music, often referred to as the universal language of mankind, transcends boundaries and divisions and brings people together in ways words fail to do so. Theevra is poised to be a testament to this idea, showcasing an assortment of Sinhala songs from diverse genres and from different eras. As the moon rises over the sacred city of Kandy, and the chilly winds tenderly embrace the audiences, they will be captured on a mesmerizing journey of 2 hours, resonating with the rich musical tones of Sri Lanka. Organized by the Oriental Music Society founded nearly 4 decades ago, and one of the most active societies at Trinity College, this event is a culmination of dedication, passion, and musical enthusiasm of the closely united Trinity community. The association’s commitment to preserving and propagating the cultural legacy of Sinhala music in the College is commendable, and Theevra stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication. The students of the OMS will take to stage, pouring their souls into each note and lyric, creating a captivating atmosphere.   Behind every performance lies hours of dedication and hard work. The singers and musicians have been meticulously trained and choreographed by the dedicated tutorial staff of Trinity College, Kandy. Their guidance ensures that every raga, thaala and swara rata is executed with precision, synchronizing with the audience heart beats. The lineup for Theevra will be spectacular. Two distinguished guest artists, Umara Sinhawansa and Mihindu Ariyaratne, will grace the stage with their unparalleled contributions that will elevate the show to a different level. Their voices blending with the melodies of the students of Trinity College, will create memories that will linger in the hearts of the audiences long after the curtains fall. These artists not only add star power to the event but also exemplify the unifying ability of music across generations. An essential component of Theevra’s success is the collaboration with the Old Trinitian Oriental Music Association [OTOMA], an alliance that connects the present students with the past pupils of Trinity. This affiliation emphasizes the continuity of musical traditions of the College, and the passing down of creativity from one generation to the next. It’s a reminder that music is a thread that weaves together different eras, creating a tapestry that tells the story of the Trinity ethos, which is nothing short of service and care for their own. The guarantee of Theevra goes beyond mere entertainment; it is a soul-stirring, therapeutic experience that aims to touch the very core of the audience’ emotions. Going a step further, Theevra is the voice of the unwavering interconnectedness of the Trinity community. The blend of musical genres, the fusion of voices, the convergence of talent and the merger of resources is set to create an atmosphere that is nothing but astounding. As the curtains rise on September 9th, the stage will be set for a musical journey that promises to be intense, inspiring, and impressive for the hill country audiences. Be there to witness the raw talent of Trinity College’s young musical maestros. By – Lalanthi Rajapakse

Article by M.H. Hamzah.  On the fresh Monday morning of July 31st, the students of the ‘Paint Your Own Future’ Art Workshop at Trinity College, Kandy, rushed excitedly to the art room with cameras in hand. We were ready for a field trip to Kegalle, accompanied by our teachers, Mrs. Shanaz Naufer and Miss Amali Peiris. Attentively, we noted our teachers’ instructions  for photography and video competitions. Looking through the bus windows, fingers poised over camera buttons, we were eager cameramen excited to capture the breathtaking beauty of nature.  As we journeyed along the road, numerous pottery shops came into view. Our teachers granted us the chance to witness the transformation of a raw lump of clay  into a marvelous creation worked by  the potter’s skillful hands, on the wheel.  Carefully clutching the pots, we had purchased, we continued to ‘Ipareny Gama‘ (ඉපැරණි ගම) in Pinnawala.  Little did we know, a surprise awaited us. Stepping into the village, it felt as though we had traveled back in time. Upon entry, a cool breeze from the surrounding paddy fields welcomed us. The village proudly displayed Sri Lankan traditions, rich culture, and the creative minds of our ancestors. It evoked memories of the tales my grandmother had shared about life in those bygone days.  The old-time hospital, known as “Weda Gedara,” (වෙද ගෙදර) was surrounded by herbs used for treatment.. The Wedarala (වෙදරාළ), akin to a doctor, explained the methods employed for curing a myriad of illnessesin days of yore. From there, we ambled along a narrow pathway that led to the house of the Gamarala (ගමරාළ), the village chief. The mini museum within his abode rekindled our familiarity with the ancient artifacts we had studied in Environmental Studies. Of course, we didn’t miss the chance to capture the authenticity on camera. The aroma of  delectable cuisine drew us to Kopi Kade (කෝපි කඩේ), where we savored traditional sweets and tea served in coconut shells.  Next, we visited the potter’s workshop, where we had the unique opportunity to shape our own pots. The carpenter’s mastery with hand tools was truly impressive, and we marveled at the inventions of our forebears. We documented the tireless efforts of the blacksmith and were struck by the precision with which a female worker operated a complex loom to weave a carpet. Observing the intricacies of the hand loom weaving machine offered a glimpse into the ingenious, self sufficient lives  of our ancestors.  The showrooms displaying  paintings and creations left us in awe. We extend our gratitude to the teachers for providing  us this marvelous opportunity. With creative ideas and artistic minds, we returned to school, deeply inspired.  Following is a presentation done by one of the students based on his visit. Remembering him on his 83rd birth anniversary, 27th July 2023. Denzil Lakshman Kobbekaduwa was born in the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) on the 27th of July 1940. It is appropriate at this moment of time to write a few words about this legend on his 83rd Birth Anniversary. He was a legendary sportsman, a great military officer who was able to command the respect of all Sri Lankans, and a person with humane qualities loved and respected by his followers locally and internationally. Denzil had his nursery education at Hillwood College Kandy and followed his primary and secondary education at Trinity College Kandy. During his tenure at Trinity College, it was clearly identified that he was a personality with great leadership qualities with the ability to focus on his classroom activities and skillfully apply himself in the field of sports. The school authorities recognised his capabilities and first appointed him as a school officer of the Lemuel House which he represented. Due to his commitment and the respect he commanded Denzil was appointed as a School Prefect and later as the Senior Prefect of Trinity College Kandy. In his classroom work, he successfully completed the GCE (O/L) Examination and subsequently completed the H.S.C. Examination and qualified to gain admission to the University of Peradeniya to continue with his Tertiary education. However, Denzil being a Sportsman and an outdoor personality opted to join the Sri Lanka Army (then Ceylon Army). Denzil was a person who contributed immensely in the field of sports when he was a senior studentat Trinity College. First, he represented the Lemuel House at Rugby Football, Hockey and Cricket. During this period, he went on to represent the Trinity College 1st XV Rugby Team, 1st XI Hockey Team and 1st XI Cricket Team. He also Captained the 1st XV Rugby Football team in 1959 and was awarded the Rugby Lion. He was also the Vice captain of the 1st XI Hockey Team and was awarded the Hockey Colours. General Denzil Kobbekaduwa s contribution to the Sri Lankan society as a Sportsman and a Military Officer has been enormous. Over the last 3 plus decades many people have written articles related to his Military activities and the leadership, he gave in the battle front. However, it is appropriate to write a few words about his contribution in the Sri Lankan Sports arena specifically in the field of Rugby Football. At the initial stage as an Officer of the Sri Lanka Army he along with his fellow officers initiated a program to develop Rugby Football within the Army and he himself played for the Army Sports Club in the Clifford Cup tournament conducted by the Ceylon Rugby Football Union. (S.L.R.F.U.) He went on to Captain the Army Rugby XV and later on coached the Sri Lanka Army team. He also played for the Defense Services Rugby XV in tournaments conducted by the S.L.R.F. U. Denzil also played Rugby for Kandy Sports Club and went on to Captain the club team in 1969. This year Kandy Sports Club ended the season as theRunner up at the Clifford Cup tournament conducted by the S.L.R.F. U. He also played for Upcountry Rugby Football team and was the captain of the team as well. His final objective was to play for Sri Lanka which he successfully accomplished. Having played Rugby at Club level and at national level he retired from playing the game but took up to coaching Rugby Teams. He was able to coach the Trinity College Kandy 1st XV team. (His Alma Mater) for four years 1967 to 1970 and Army Sports Club team for several years. Having done Rugby coaching assignments, he took up to the administration of the game. He was appointed as the Secretary of the S.L.R.U. in 1973 / 74. This was the year Asia Cup Rugby Tournament was held in Sri Lanka. Japan won the tournament while Sri Lanka ended up as the Runner up. He also took up to assignments of Rugby Refereeing and was nominated as an A grade referee of the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society. Denzil was appointed as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society and was nominated as a Referee of the Asian Rugby Referees Society. He was also the Sri Lankan Rugby Referee / Manager of the Sri Lankan Rugby team on many overseas tours of the Sri Lanka Rugby team during that era. Neutral Referees was the call of the day to officiate Schools Rugby Football games. However due to his impartial refereeing he was the first Trinitian to officiate a Bradby Shield game, Royal College Vs Trinity College. And from Royal it was Jagath Fernando who blew the whistle. Denzil was also a sitting member of the Duncan White Sports Foundation which supported Athletics. This legends contribution to the sporting arena was all voluntary services and no remuneration was received by him. On the 14th of January 2023 at an awards ceremony conducted by the S.L.R.F.U. a special award was presented by the Rugby stalwarts of Sri Lanka to honour the services rendered by Denzil for Sri Lanka Rugby. The award was presented by Ajith Abeyratne on behalf of the S.L.R.F.U,. another distinguish Rugby personality and was received by Mrs. Lali Kobbekaduwa.. Now I will present a short review regarding his career with the Sri Lanka Army. After leaving Trinity College in 1960 Denzil joined the Sri Lanka Army (Ceylon Army) as an Officer Cadet and had his initial training at the Military Academy in Diyathalawa. After successfully completing the training Denzil moved to United Kingdom for Military Training with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst UK. Having successfully completed the 2-year Military Training Course at Sandhurst he returned to Sri Lanka and joined the Armored Crops Regiment as a young officer. He being a capable officer had an excellent career with the Sri Lanka Army starting as a Lieutenant and rose to a Major General over a period of time. During this

A Review by Muhammed Jameel (Web Content Team)  The 77th Bradby Shield 1st Leg Encounter took place on July 22, 2023, at the Pallakalle Rugby Stadium, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. The long-awaited clash saw Trinity College emerge victorious in a thrilling match.  Led by a determined lineup including Thenuk Fernando, Dehan Watagoda, Senula Alexander, Venuka Kumarage, Ravin Illangaratne, Harith Samaraweera, Chamendra Dhanapala, Thisanga Dissanayake, Rushen Bandaranayake, Shan Althaf, Anuhas Kodithuwakku, Lakindu Herath, Sachindu Wansekara, Abidh Jameel, and Attab Manzil, the Trinity Lions showed unwavering belief and trust in their abilities giving a nail-biting encounter to all spectators.  From the moment the lions lined up in the tunnel, their passion and dedication to Trinity were evident. The game kicked off with fierce aggression, with Trinity initially pushed back into their own half. The Trinity defense was torn apart as the clear space left on the blind side was a gift to the Royalists. The ball was worked beautifully and the Trinitians were punished for the gaps in the defense line. The conversion however going astray. Despite the challenges, the lions strategized for more points and opted for a penalty goal, with young Shan Althaf taking the kick, but nerves got the better of him, and the ball went astray.  The Royalists fought back, executing a relentless ‘Royal rolling maul’ that threatened Trinity. However, the Trinitians showcased incredible strength, stopping the maul and quickly launching an attack with the ball in hand.  Mistakes and penalties came into play, but both teams showcased impressive resilience. The Royalists secured two tries, though the conversion was foiled by the unyielding wind.  Half Time – TCK (0) vs RCK (10)  Trinity had several opportunities to gain ground, but missteps and fumbles hindered their progress. However, they were awarded a penalty near the goalposts, and Shan Althaf redeemed himself, successfully scoring a penalty goal.  The second half saw the lions roaring with determination, ushering the Royalists into their own half. Trinity gained territory and looked set to score, but the Royal defense held them up, denying them a try.  The Trinitians continued to push forward, tantalizingly close to glory but encountering some setbacks. However, their determination paid off when the mighty flanker, Thisanga Dissanayake, scored Trinity’s first try, with Shan Althaf converting it perfectly.  As the Royalists chose not to risk another rolling maul, the Tuskers opted for a penalty goal, which unfortunately lacked direction and distance.  In the game’s thrilling climax, a penalty was awarded to Trinity in front of the posts. Shan Althaf seized the opportunity and kicked the decisive penalty goal.  With emotions running high, the final whistle blew, sealing Trinity’s 13-10 victory over the Royal Tuskers.  Full Time – TCK (13) vs RCC (10)  The Under 16 category saw Trinity continue their winning streak, securing a triumphant 15-10 victory over the Royalists.  Special thanks were extended to the coaching staff of the 1st XV team and the Under 16 team, as well as the National Kandyan Dancing Troupe for their captivating performances.  The support from the Trinity community, including students, alumni, faculty, and loyal fans, proved to be an invaluable source of motivation and encouragement. Their unwavering presence at the stadium and unwavering belief in the team added an electrifying atmosphere to the match, amplifying the roar of the Trinity Lions.  Beyond the victory, this encounter showcased the enduring spirit of sportsmanship, where competitors displayed mutual respect and camaraderie, reflecting the true essence of the Bradby Shield tradition.  As the Lions bask in the glory of their triumph and prepare for the next challenge in the 2nd Leg, the entire Trinity community stands united in celebration of this momentous achievement. The journey to reclaim the Bradby Shield after 11 years was a testament to their resilience, passion, and commitment to excellence. With each victory, they carve a legacy that will inspire future generations of Trinity Lions.  Let the reverberating roar of triumph echo far and wide – we believe!
Review by Nimuthu Pathiraja (Web Content Team)    Trinity College recently concluded its impactful Climate Week program, which echoed the powerful message, “If we protect the environment, it will protect us,” throughout its premises. Held from July 3rd to July 7th, this significant event was organized by the Trinity College Environment Pioneer Brigade, under the visionary concept of Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB. The program aimed to educate students about the urgent threat of climate change and its impact on our future.  The Climate Week program had a multitude of objectives. First, it aimed to raise awareness about environmental issues among students, teachers, and staff. Additionally, it sought to encourage the adoption of sustainable practices in daily life, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, using eco-friendly products, and promoting sustainable transportation. The program also aimed to foster teamwork and collaboration among students, teachers, and staff, recognizing that addressing environmental challenges requires collective effort. Furthermore, it aimed to promote environmental education and inspire students to develop an interest in environmental science and sustainability. Lastly, it aimed to showcase the ongoing environmental initiatives and projects within the school community, inspiring others to get involved.  Throughout the week, a series of noteworthy speeches and initiatives captivated the participants. On July 5th, a special educational program was held for middle school students, featuring two keynote speeches from renowned experts in their respective fields. Dr. Sewwandhi Chandrasekara, a prominent lecturer from the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, delivered an instrumental speech on “Climate Change and What We Can Do About It.” Additionally, Mr. Akila Lakshan from Cleantech PVT. LTD. provided a brief lecture on “Solid Waste Management.”  Two days later, at the Upper School assembly, Professor Dushantha Madagedara delivered an unprecedented speech on “How We Can Combat Air Pollution.” Later that same day, a bid to establish a medicinal herbal plantation near the College Chapel Drive concluded successfully. This initiative aimed to educate students about our indigenous plant history in a resourceful manner.  Undoubtedly, the Poetry and Poster competition, held to commemorate Climate Week, was one of the most anticipated events. The students from both the Middle and Upper School exhibited remarkable enthusiasm and unparalleled commitment, reflecting their dedication to building a better society for the future.  The program effectively educated students about critical topics that are often overlooked. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Haritha Pavura Society for their unwavering support, without which the event would not have been a success. The distinguished lecturers, Professor Dushantha Madagedara, Dr. Sewwandhi Chandrasekara, and Mr. Akila Lakshan, also deserve special recognition for their valuable contributions.  We would like to extend our appreciation to the Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, Vice Principal Mr. Krishanthan Anthonydas, Headmistress Mrs. Krishni George, Co-Curricular Coordinator Mr. Wasana Dissanayake, and Mrs. Nimesha Wimalasena, the teacher in charge of the Environment Pioneer Brigade. We also acknowledge the support of Mr. Mohamed Zarook, Mr. Mohamed Inzimam, Mrs. Kaushani Amarasinghe, Mrs. Darshani Abeykoon, and all the teachers and support staff who played an instrumental role in the success of the program.  The Climate Week program at Trinity College has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on students, inspiring them to become advocates for environmental conservation. Article written by Yumeth Gunathilake & Kavithra Rajapaksha from the Junior School Nature Club We, the nature lovers of the Junior School Nature Club, had an unforgettable experience visiting Dunumadalawa. We eagerly awaited the day when our teacher, Mrs. Indu Gunawardena, announced the “Walk.” Equipped with backpacks filled with binoculars, notebooks, pencils, caps, raincoats, first aid kits, snacks in reusable boxes, and large water bottles, we were ready for our adventure. The night before our walk felt long as we eagerly awaited dawn. We gathered at school by 6:30 a.m. and reached the gates of Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve around 7 a.m. Our guide warmly welcomed us and accompanied us throughout the reserve. As we stepped into the forest, a sense of adventure overcame us. The air flowing through the towering trees was cool and fresh, inviting us to take deep breaths and embrace its purity. We made sure to maintain our best behavior, respecting the tranquility of the forest. With each step, the forest grew thicker and darker, making us feel tinier. We walked through the forest, observing birds and animals, feeling like we were part of a magnificent green wonderland. There was so much to see and explore, and it made us realize how much we were missing out on this fresh greenery in our daily lives. The fatigue from the challenging forest path vanished as we immersed ourselves in the natural symphony. The melodious calls of birds and the dancing trees created a magical atmosphere. The forest was full of wonders, sparking our curiosity and leading us to ask questions. Luckily, we had two experts, Dr. Harsha Ariyaratne and Dr. Nishan Dharmasena, who shared their vast knowledge about animals, birds, snakes, and trees. With their guidance, we were able to identify many birds and animals, including monkeys, birds, squirrels, lizards, snakes, and many other small creatures. They explained that Dunumadalawa is a home to many birds endemic to Sri Lanka. During our visit, we had the privilege of observing some incredible birds. The Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrike, Brown Capped Babbler, Tickle’s Blue Flycatcher, Velvet Fronted Nuthatch, and Grey Headed Fish Eagle were among the species we spotted. We were also delighted by the colorful butterflies, such as the Blue Mormon, Common Lascar, and Common Albatross. The combination of trees, fresh air, and the sounds of animals creates a truly enchanting forest experience. We managed to capture these special moments, serving as a reminder to seek more opportunities to explore and reconnect with nature. Situated at the heart of the world heritage city, Kandy, Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve is a lush green paradise covering around 480 hectares. In the early 1900s, it used to be a busy coffee, cocoa, and tea plantation known as “Walker’s Estate” or Wakara Watte. Ancient coffee, cocoa, and tea plants, as well as the ruins of Walker’s Estate, can still be found here. The forest reserve is not only a treasure trove of nature but also serves as a crucial water source for Kandy. The British built Dunumadalawa Wewa to provide drinking water to the city, and together with Roseneath Wewa, they contain enough water to support the population of Kandy. The forest reserve is protected under the guidance of the Municipal Council of Kandy. Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve is home to 13 bird species and 29 sub-species that can only be found here. The forest is also a habitat for various animals, including leopards, fishing cats, rusty spotted cats, barking deer, monkeys, wild boars, and porcupines. It’s like a big cat family living alongside other fascinating creatures! One of the important roles of this forest reserve is to help control air pollution in Kandy. Both Dunumadalawa and Udawattekele play a vital role in preventing pollution levels from worsening, while also providing greenery to the entire Kandy area. References:
