A Cycling Jamboree!

Trinity College Cycling club recently organized a thrilling cycling Jamboree, on October 9th, 2023, targeting students from grades 6 to 9. This adventurous event unfolded within the lush and enchanting confines of the Udawattekale forest reserve. The day commenced with a warm welcome and essential guidance provided by Mr. Dulanjaya Abeywickrama, setting the stage for an exciting journey. Cyclists were then treated to an illuminating Mountain Bike (MTB) workshop led by Mr. Dhammika Bambaradeniya. Here, they were enlightened on the inner workings of their bicycles and schooled on how to safely navigate challenging terrains. With newfound knowledge in their backpacks, the cyclists set f==orth on their expedition through the forest, putting their training into practice. This hands-on experience allowed these young riders to not only gain a profound understanding of their bikes but also the art of cycling on rugged terrains. TCK Cycling Club can proudly attest to a day well-spent, as seasoned and amateur cyclists pedaled their way through the wilderness, concluding the Jamboree with newfound wisdom and an unquenchable enthusiasm for cycling. Keep the wheels turning!
Dunumadalawa forest reserve is situated closer to the Kandy viewpoint. It was a great honour to go to a forest which was forbidden in the past. Field trips are a requirement for children to learn about nature, our endemic animals and plants. This visit further helped us to learn the history of Dunumadalawa and Kandy.  Once I woke up on the 14th of September, I was overwhelmed with the excitement of visiting the  Dunumadalawa Forest Reserve.  At 6.00 am, I said “Goodbye” to my father after reaching school.  Our team left for Dunumadalawa at 7.00am.  A brief stop at the Kandy viewpoint helped us to absorb the marvelous view of the city. After a walk of about 1km, we reached the entrance of the forest. Our teacher led us to an extremely huge treehouse at the entrance.  This place got crowded with the grade 5 classes of our college. Many boys came up and sang songs, told some stories, and delivered speeches.  A forest officer came and shared some valuable information about this historical place. He explained to us the meaning of “Dunumadalawa”. In the past, soldiers from the king’s army went to the Dunumadalawa forest. The word ‘madalawa’ means ‘large place’.   The trees from this forest were used to make bows and arrows which make the word “Dunu”, He continued, “In the merciless reign of the British, there was a time where the water level of Kandy City was decreasing. Many people suffered without water and some even died. A British man named Walker made the Dunumadalawa Lake which would supply water to Kandy. It was created between 1875 – 1876 with a depth of 50 feet and length of 145 feet.” He told us there are countless numbers of green vipers, 7 leopards and 3 cubs in the forest. He said, “We found the details by fixing cameras at different places”. I was petrified. After he shared the information, he said that littering in the forest was strictly prohibited. Then we had our breakfast and began our thrilling journey.  We were first given a leech repellent. As we started walking, it started to rain. We put on our raincoats and our guide broke a branch following a tradition and entered the forest.   I was overwhelmed seeing a steep hill. It was hard to go down the hill, I slid and hit Thenuka in the back. While we were walking, I was almost lost, but I caught up with the others. We trekked through the forest and reached the Dunumadalawa Lake. It was big as he had told us. Our guide said that it can carry 65000 gallons and we crossed the bridge and went to the other side of the forest.  The grass was very high, and we were scared whether there were green vipers hiding among the tall grass. We journeyed further and crossed an area near a waterfall. Some boys had seen a leopard behind the waterfall, but I didn’t see one.  Once we resumed walking after a water break, I saw a crowd of boys straying from the group. I shouted to the others asking to go right and I too went right and caught up with the others. Those who went in the wrong direction came about 10 minutes later. Teacher kept them in front so they will not get lost again. We climbed another hill and took a break and journeyed to a treehouse. I climbed to the treehouse which was totally terrifying. Climbing down was the hardest part I have ever experienced.  Next, we journeyed to Roseneath Ela. Here, we had chicken fried rice for lunch. For our dessert of Watalappan, we queued up with our empty lunch boxes. Then it started to rain. We put on our raincoats and went to the other side where we lined up to go to the bus.   As children, we learned that we have a common responsibility to protect our endemic animals, plants, our natural forests and jungles and all other geographical places. This was an epic journey I was proud to experience.  Thank you, my dear teachers and the administration of Trinity College, for providing us with such a wonderful experience.  By Jineth Indumina Athapaththu (Grade 5C)

Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas   The Cycling Club of TCK embarked on an exhilarating journey as they collaborated with the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital on their annual Children’s Day Ride on 1st of October 2023.   The sun had begun to cast its golden rays as the clock struck 8 in the morning. Cyclists young and old, enthusiastically gathered at the hospital’s main entrance, eagerly awaiting the commencement of the ride. It was a delightful and a pleasant sight to see students from Trinity College come together to celebrate an all-time favourite past time of childhood: cycling.   The route chosen for this memorable ride was picturesque.  Participants pedalled from the hospital’s main entrance, weaving through the charming streets of Peradeniya, and finally reaching their destination, the Kandy City Center (KCC).   As they treadled along, the cyclists were entertained by traditional dancers, a vibrant symbol of Sri Lankan culture, captivating all with their mesmerizing performances.   The dancers, with their graceful movements and melodious songs, transcended language barriers to convey a powerful message – the sheer enthusiasm of cycling and the paramount noteworthiness of safeguarding our environment.  Amidst the rhythmic beats of music and drums, in a spectacular display of colours, it was impossible not to feel uplifted and inspired. The message of cherishing the environment, wrapped in the festivities of Children’s Day, left a lasting impression on everyone present. It was a reminder that the simple act of cycling can play a pivotal role in reducing our carbon footprint and preserving the beauty of our planet for future generations.  Of course, a celebration like this wouldn’t be complete without some well-deserved refreshments. The Kandy Cycling Club graciously organised a delightful spread for all attendees. As the riders savoured their treats, promoting animated chatter, sharing the joy of participating in such a heartwarming event.  This event was not just a ride; it was a journey of pride, filled with cultural richness, and an important reminder of our responsibility towards the environment.   It was a day when the spirit of childhood and a mutual concern for nature blended harmoniously, leaving indelible memories in the hearts of all who attended.  As we look back on this remarkable day, let us be inspired to continue cycling, spreading awareness, and promoting the need for a greener planet: One Pedal at A Time.
Trinity College’s Boxing Team has made a triumphant return to the Stubbs Shield, securing the 3rd place in this year’s competition. Sharing the podium with them is S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. Despite  challenges, Trinity’s boxers showcased their skills, winning 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals, setting a new milestone in the school’s sports history.  Trinity entered the Stubbs Shield event with a team of six boxers, as two had to stay behind due to injuries sustained during the Rugby League. Despite being short-handed, the team demonstrated their resilience and determination.  Captain Master Waruna Bandara led by example, exhibiting remarkable skill and spirit throughout the tournament. He faced a series of tough opponents and was eligible for the final.   In a stunning victory, Waruna outsmarted the Best Boxer Cup winner from the TB Jayah meet earlier this year, securing a Gold medal. Children Cheered!

Reviewed by Nimuthu Pathiraja On the 2nd of October, the students of Trinity College were treated to a musical extravaganza by their teachers.  Followed by meaningful themes, aimed at making the children aware of how they can make the world a better place to live in, the teachers entertained the students to a toe tapping, four-hour, lively performance.    This was particularly a busy day for the whole school, with everyone involved in celebratory activities, filled with exciting and noteworthy events.  The aim of the teachers was to make this Children’s Day unforgettable yet purposeful. They entertained students from grades 1 to 13 with mesmerizing songs under the emotive theme ‘The land belongs to you.’  In this regard, the major objective was to provide songs that we can learn from, songs that promote peace and harmony. They were not only pleasant and educational, but fun, as evidenced by the thunderous applause that followed each entrance. It’s also worth mentioning that the teachers added variety by having multilingual songs further, reinforcing the objectives promoting peace and harmony.  After spending hours of consistent practice throughout the weekend and during all their free time, the teachers delivered. The students were captivated. This performance was truly an example of the unconditional care teachers have for us and how we will always be indebted to them.  However, the celebrations were far from over, with students returning to classes having successfully organized talent shows, class parties, and games within their happy space: the classroom.   Before too long, the much-anticipated inter-class Tap Rugby tournament organised by the School Officers’ Guild kicked off. The tournament proved to be thrilling, intense, and competitive, with a significant participation and well organised matches.  Throughout all this action, the Culinary Club offered tasty delicacies in the quadrangle premises, and it’s undeniable that everyone, from students to teachers, enjoyed their delectable preparations.   Undoubtedly, Children’s Day is a pivotal event of the year. The new initiative to make this year’s Children’s Day was undeniably a resounding success, both educational and enjoyable.    The happiness experienced by students was unprecedented, and therefore, we would like to thank The Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, The Vice Principal, Mr. Krishanthan Antonydas,  The teachers, The School Officers Guild, the Culinary Club, Support Staff, and the PROMWEB team for their guidance.

Trinity’s Mechanical Mavericks

The Automotive Society of Trinity College conducted a workshop on the “Process of Overhauling an Internal Combustion Engine” on September 22, 2023, with technical support from Carsons Garage in Kandy.  The event was designed as an awareness programme, open to 50 society members from grade 8 and above, as well as other interested students. The programme was conducted at the Automotive workshop adjacent to the College Gymnasium.  In 2019, the society received a petrol motor from DIMO Lanka to provide a hands-on experience in engine operational principles and assembling of components.  However, the pandemic in the following year halted progress on this project. Eventually, the society inquired from Carsons Garage about resuming work on the motor and hence received the greenlight.  The first step was to assess the motor’s condition and technical details by disassembling it, inspecting its internal structure and determining the necessary steps and components needed for servicing it, in order to restore it to working order. The society requested Carsons Garage to conduct this assessment process as a demonstration for the students, which they readily agreed to.  Mr. Mohan, the Head of Carsons Garage (and an alumnus and past president of the Automotive Society in 1972), along with his son (a member of the 2019 batch), visited the college with a Technical Lead and three Technicians. Unexpected heavy rainfall towards the evening, led the program to start an hour earlier than scheduled.  During the session, the experts explained various motor components such as the exhaust manifold, inlet manifold, alternator, starter motor, and their functions. They also demonstrated the proper use of tools and equipment to maintain industrial safety standards, preventing damage to workers, engines or tools.  Students had the opportunity to use tools to tighten or loosen nuts and bolts to specified torque levels, as well as to mount components like distributors and spark plugs, gaining an explicit experience in the technical aspects involved.  After an informative and productive session lasting over three hours, the workshop concluded with the conglomeration of all removed components, fixing a piston binding issue (piston no. 2), and setting the timing of valves and distributor. The students demonstrated a high level of workmanship and discipline, which was noted by the visitors.  While students often learn theoretical aspects of technology, they rarely have the chance to apply these theories in real-world scenarios. Learning is not just about knowledge but also acquiring skills and attitudes, which are crucial in preparing students for the corporate world.  The Automotive Society aims to provide members with these skills and attitudes by organizing workshops and field visits within its scope.   The Society conveys their heartfelt gratitude to all the Grade Heads, Head of Co-curricular Activities, and College Administration for their support at every stage of this endeavor. Without their assistance, this achievement would not have been possible. The Automotive Society members hope to organize and conduct many more events in the future for the benefit of the Trinity Community.  Reviewed by Mr. Subash Dhanasekara  (MIC – Automotive Society)

At half time, no numbers were shown on the scoreboard.  Trinity however, showed promise as they managed to clinch a try in the closing minutes. The title-deciding try was scored with great set pace  and teamwork.   This success was a well-deserved one for Trinity but, kudos to D. S. The Trinitians experienced the taste of double victory when the winger, Dimath Ambepitiya,  was also awarded the Best Player. Trinity extends their heartfelt gratitude towards the coaches and the teacher-in-charge for their exuberant efforts toward the tournament.

Review by Thusath Dissanayake  Master Menath Kahapola and Master Shaluka Herath successfully clinched first and second places in the The student Segment of the Culinary Champions 2023 competition, a collaborative effort of, Lanka Exhibition & Conference Services (Pvt) Limited, supported by the Kandy Hoteliers Association and Ceylon Professional Chefs Association,  was held at Sahas Uyana on the 16th of September.   Masters Menath Kahapola and Shaluka Herath, participated in this 45-minute culinary face-off, clinching first and second places. In an amazing feat of masterful cooking prowess, despite their young ages, these two chefs reached a top level in this challenge which earned them places.  The Winning Dishes in Full Spotlight  An aromatic butter chicken with cumin infused naan, was delicately prepared by Master Meneth Kahapola.  Master Shaluka Herath, on the other hand, concocted shrimp and cream cheese filled ravioli with a brown butter sauce. The dishes upon inquiry, and judge’s critiques were exquisite masterpieces and a big hit among the crowd.   The Culinary and Hospitality Club interviewed our crowned cooks to inquire how they felt pre and post competition.   “At first my friend and I went in unbeknownst, the moment we saw the competition , it was on MasterChef Junior at that point. We were divided into stations of our own, which was a bit nerve wracking, but the judges eased things over. The crowd seemed really captured by the student segment which was cool, and we had an entourage cheering away. To tell you about my dish, I made something that I enjoyed making, in a nutshell I made butter chicken with cumin infused naan. When the final minutes were ticking down and plating was underway the crowd moved in for a better look, pressuring, but they were enjoying what they saw, knowing that, helped ease our nerves.” Master Menath Kahapola “The Experience off the bat was new to both of us, the butterflies started going when we figured out that we were competing against hotel school pros however, the encouraging words of our teacher helped us calm down and get a footing. The moment I got to know that we got a higher placement than the hotel school, I was extremely excited because, it is something I never thought I would achieve.” Master Shaluka Herath  The Culinary and Hospitality Club applauds and wishes the best of luck to the young champions.
Nimuthu Pathiraja reports. Young masters from grades 6 and 7 at Trinity College have harnessed their inner strengths and creativity to mastermind inspiring contraptions that could make welcoming changes to humankind.   These young inventors, through a tremendous amount of grit and resilience, have made their parents and teachers proud.   ‘Densor 2’   Inventor Master Yashwin Fernando.  Considering the adverse effects of plastic and the factors affecting oil distribution, ‘Densor 2’ will minimise pollution and harvest much-needed fossil fuel from our waste.  As plastic is an extract of crude oil, Densor 2 intakes plastic and converts it into gasoline and LP gas. In a process of heating up polythene and plastic, a gaseous component is released. This gas will be cooled and condensed in the radiator to emit from the valves, LP Gas!  Our skilled innovator has wisely recycled an AK12 radiator from a Nissan March, a tin oil barrel and copper and silicone pipes Water Leak Detector Inventors: Masters. Ramesh Shanjevigaran, Jed Angelo George, Hareshwar Baleshwar and Firnaz Fiaz  Recognizing water as a scarce and precious resource, and the importance of minimising its waste, our students have collaborated to create a device: a large stainless-steel scale, wired expertly to avoid power shortages, would detect the source of water leaks.  Solid Waste Management System  Inventors: Masters Viduna Rathnasiri, Akain Wijerathne, Prabuditha Wijethunga,  Chenul Dias, and Nethmira Godigama  This efficient Solid Waste management system engages in the collection, treatment and disposal of solid waste. This invention will save natural resources, protect biodiversity, and encourage a sustainable lifestyle.    The process starts with an ultrasonic sensor manually detecting IR. A signal is sent to the servo, which opens and closes the mouth of the garbage dumper.  Refuse goes in on a slide to the conveyor where the process starts.  Large pieces of plastic and polythene will be stuck in a barrier. Smaller portions of food and garden refuse will directly move towards Bin No.1. The pieces which get stuck will move along to the 2nd dustbin.  This magnificent invention has made use of a Servo motor, Ultrasonic Distance sensor, Bearings and shafts, Conveyor Cloth strips, a 12v motor, 4 3.7-volt batteries and other electronic equipment.  Monkey Deterrent Device  Inventor: Master. Gagana Jayasooriya In recent times, Monkeys, have caused considerable damage to public and private property and agriculture.  In a move to protect both the primate and property, a highly effective and efficient device has been invented.  Electricity is provided to positive terminals that are directly connected to a sensor, buzzer, and a motor.  The negative current will flow through the terminals of the transistor and connect them to the negative terminals of a sensor. Consequently, a faint sound wave will be released to scare monkeys away, ensuring their safety as well as protection of human livelihood.   This novel creation consists of a motion sensor module, a transistor, a resistor, a buzzer, a motor, a bread board, and other electronic necessities.  Coal Powered Street Model  Inventors: Masters Deenith and Mahadhi  Energy is one of the most important and scarce resources. Therefore, this new process to convert coal to energy could be considered an immense discovery.  After charcoal is heated, the motor is switched on and the lid of a turbine oscillates.  Water vapor stimulates the turbine, making it spin. While the turbine spins, the Dynamo will also spin. Electricity is generated to power model streetlights.  This invention was produced with turbines, dynamos, gear motors etc.  Through tremendous astounding planning, dedication and grit, the youngsters have devised timely appliances which deserve praise.  On a final say, it is fair to state that these innovations have been made through an unprecedented amount of planning, dedication, grit, resilience, and perseverance. These inventions are much appreciated and encouraged. We must also note down a special word of gratitude goes to the immense guidance shown by the Science teacher Mr. Mohammed Inzimam and the parents of these students. Words of appreciation should be conveyed to the Headmistress of the Middle School Mrs. Krishni George, Mrs. Bhagya Dissanayake and Mrs. Fathima Majeed must also be acknowledged for their unstinted guidance. We wish all the students in their future endeavours to make the world a better place.
