Trinity College, Kandy (TCK) has long placed equal importance on academic achievement, character development, and the cultivation of skills beyond the classroom. On Friday, 22 May 2026, the Centre for Excellence welcomed Old Trinitian Mr Dinuk Wickramanayake to speak with the Advanced Level Commerce students.  Drawing from his experience balancing academics, school leadership, and competitive cricket during his years at TCK, Mr Wickramanayake reflected on how those formative experiences shaped his professional life and outlook. His story offered students a practical reminder that purposeful effort and consistency can open meaningful opportunities in the years ahead.  Mr Wickramanayake left TCK in 2013 as a Prefect, Captain of the 1st XI Cricket Team, and recipient of the Ryde Gold Medal, the most prestigious award presented to the College’s best all-round senior student. He also achieved four A passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination, securing District Rank 52.  During his time at TCK, he earned Cricket Colours and recognition as a Lionsman for his achievements in the sport. He was also part of three unbeaten College cricket teams, including the record-breaking 2012 side that secured the Schools League, One Day, and T20 championships together with the Big Match in the same season. He further represented the Sri Lanka Under-19 Cricket Team and earned national colours while still a schoolboy.  Following his years at TCK, Mr Wickramanayake graduated with First Class Honours in International Business from the University of Colombo and became a CIMA Passed Finalist, while concurrently representing the championship-winning Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. He later served as a Brand Manager at Nestlé, overseeing global brands such as MILO and MILKMAID, before moving into entrepreneurship in the digital sector.  The Session  Speaking candidly, Mr Wickramanayake emphasised the importance of deliberate planning and the value of beginning early. Reflecting on his school years, he described the challenge of balancing studies, cricket, and leadership responsibilities, and the discipline those commitments instilled in him over time.  He also encouraged students to make the most of opportunities without waiting for the “perfect” moment, and to view school not only as a place of study, but as an environment that shapes habits, resilience, and character.  His experiences across sport, higher education, the corporate sector, and entrepreneurship illustrated that professional growth is rarely linear, and that adaptability and clarity of purpose remain invaluable qualities for young people preparing for the future.  A Continuing Initiative  This session formed part of the Centre for Excellence’s continuing effort to reconnect students with inspiring young alumni, individuals who distinguished themselves not only academically, but also through co-curricular involvement and personal character.  The initiative offers current students more than advice. It provides visible examples of how commitment inside and outside the classroom can contribute towards meaningful higher education and professional pathways.  TCK extends its sincere gratitude to Mr Dinuk Wickramanayake for generously sharing his time and experiences. His visit was a valuable opportunity for the Commerce students and a reminder that Respice Finem is not merely a motto to be recited, but a principle to be lived.

Academic excellence has long stood at the heart of life at Trinity College, Kandy. On Tuesday, 19 May 2026, the College gathered to honour a distinguished group of students who achieved three ‘A’ passes at their first attempt in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination 2025.  The special felicitation ceremony was held during the morning assembly to recognise these young Trinitians, celebrating not only their outstanding examination results, but also the discipline, perseverance and commitment to learning that made those achievements possible.  The ceremony was attended by the students’ parents, who were warmly welcomed to the College as partners in this achievement. The Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, presided over the proceedings and presented awards to each of the 3A achievers, reaffirming the College’s commitment to recognising academic distinction.  The achievers, recognised by subject stream and district ranking, are as follows:  Biological Science  D. G. H. Abeygunarathne, District Rank: 1 | Island Rank: 5   J. A. N. P. Jayasinghe, District Rank: 41   I. W. P. S. Wimalasiri, District Rank: 42   Physical Science  R. R. J. S. G. Rajakaruna, District Rank: 4   A. M. S. D. Adikari, District Rank: 14   N. W. C. P. Wijayakumara, District Rank: 19   D. M. R. P. Dassanayake, District Rank: 23   P. C. T. Thalagahawatte, District Rank: 38 H. M. D. A. B. Herath, District Rank: 41     Sri Ganeashan Vishaal, District Rank: 25     Particular distinction was noted in the achievement of Master D. G. H. Abeygunarathne of the Biological Science stream, who secured first place in the district and fifth place island-wide, a remarkable accomplishment that brought honour to the College.  Each award presented by the Principal served not merely as a token of recognition, but also as an affirmation of the dedication shown by the students and their families throughout their Advanced Level journey.  Addressing the gathering, the Principal, Very Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara (Prior OSB) reflected on a dimension of success that often goes unspoken. He observed that academic achievement, meaningful as it is, should never come at the cost of one’s values or responsibilities towards family. Referring to the journeys of many high-achieving students who move far from home to pursue higher education, he reminded the young Trinitians that true excellence is measured not by results alone, but also by the character one carries into the world.  He encouraged the achievers to remember the parents who sacrificed quietly and waited patiently at home, and to ensure that, in pursuing their futures, they never leave behind those who made those futures possible. His address served as a timely reminder that value education remains central to a Trinity education, and that the College’s aspirations for its students extend well beyond academic attainment.  Sincere gratitude was expressed to the parents for their unwavering support and encouragement, and to the academic staff whose guidance at every stage formed the foundation upon which these results were built.  The occasion also served as an inspiration to the wider College community, reminding students that sustained effort and a genuine love for learning can lead to achievements that extend far beyond the examination hall.  As these young Trinitians embark on the next chapter of their lives, may the values of discipline, integrity and excellence continue to guide them, and may they always carry with them a deep gratitude for those who supported them from the very beginning.

Reviewed by Oneth Croos (Student)   As part of SCM Sunday, the Student Christian Movement (SCM) of Trinity College organised the third Sunday Service held on 17 May 2026 at the Trinity College Chapel. The service brought together students, parents, staff, and the College Chaplain for an evening of worship and fellowship. Students from the combined classes of Grades 1, 4, 9, and 13 actively participated in the service through Scripture readings, hymn singing, prayer, and other acts of worship. Students delivered the Scripture readings with sincerity and reverence, while the voices of the Grade 1 and Grade 4 students filled the Chapel with warmth and a sense of peace, creating a memorable worship experience for all present. The sermon focused on how the Holy Spirit guides and strengthens us in our service to God, encouraging everyone to live with faith, humility, and purpose in their daily lives. This was followed by a time of intercessory prayer, where the congregation joined together in praying for unity, gratitude, the Trinity community, and the wider world. Following the service, a time of fellowship brought everyone together in a warm and joyful setting. It was an opportunity for students, parents, and staff to share conversations, strengthen connections, and enjoy the sense of togetherness that makes such gatherings meaningful. Moments like these remind us that faith is nurtured not only through worship, but also through fellowship, service, and shared experiences. The Sunday Service reflected unity within the College community and encouraged students in their spiritual and personal growth. The SCM continues to play an important role in the spiritual life of students at Trinity College by encouraging faith, leadership, service, and fellowship. Initiatives such as SCM Sunday provide students with opportunities to deepen their spiritual lives, take responsibility in worship, and grow together as one community. “Let all that you do be done in love.”1 Corinthians 16:14
In a first-of-its-kind initiative at Trinity College, Kandy (TCK), the young Trinitians recently explored the rapidly evolving world of CAD design, digital fabrication, and industrial-grade 3D printing through an immersive 3D Design & Printing Workshop organised by the Technopreneurship Club in collaboration with Technotronic Futuristics. Conducted across two sessions held on 18 May and 21 May 2026, the workshop took place at the newly built AI & Robotics Laboratory at the New Science Building and provided students with a unique opportunity to experience the complete workflow of modern product design and prototyping.  The sessions were jointly conducted by Mr Venura Wijesekera and Mr Yasassvi Wijesekara, old boys of TCK and Directors of Technotronic Futuristics, a Sri Lankan technology and innovation company, together with their team. Through hands-on demonstrations and industry-focused guidance, students were introduced to technologies and workflows currently used across global engineering, manufacturing, and creative industries.  Students first learned the fundamentals of Autodesk Fusion 360, where they explored CAD modelling, 3D design principles, and digital prototyping. Participants were encouraged to create their own custom models independently following the first session, allowing them to apply their creativity while gaining exposure to industry-standard design workflows.  The second session focused on transforming those digital designs into real-world objects through live demonstrations using professional-grade 3D printing technology. Students returned to the AI & Robotics Laboratory to witness their own models being prepared, sliced, and printed in real time, providing a firsthand understanding of how engineers and product designers bring digital concepts into physical reality.  One of the highlights of the workshop was the opportunity for students to interact with a range of modern industrial-grade equipment brought in by Technotronic Futuristics. The sessions featured advanced filament and resin-based 3D printers together with professional 3D scanning technology, allowing students to observe multiple forms of additive manufacturing and digital scanning workflows in action. The workshop demonstrated the precision, capabilities, and real-world applications of modern 3D printing technologies across engineering, architecture, product development, healthcare, and creative industries.  Mr Yasassvi conducted live demonstrations on the operation of the printers and explained the complete workflow behind 3D printing technology, including modelling, slicing, calibration, material selection, and print preparation. Students were also given the opportunity to print their own designs with the guidance of the Technotronic Futuristics team, making the sessions both practical and highly interactive.  The workshop also highlighted Trinity’s growing investment in future-focused digital learning platforms. Earlier this year, TCK successfully acquired Autodesk Education Pro licences for the entire school community, providing both staff and students with professional access to Autodesk’s full suite of industry-grade software tools and advanced AI-powered workflows. This initiative now enables Trinitians to explore professional applications including CAD design, engineering simulations, animation, architecture, product design, and digital manufacturing using the same platforms utilised across global industries.  This initiative reflects Trinity’s continuing efforts to expand opportunities in technology, engineering, creativity, and innovation. Over the years, the College has steadily introduced students to emerging technologies through a variety of programmes and initiatives. In 2016, students were introduced to Arduino programming, enabling them to build and programme their own robots. In 2021, these initiatives expanded further through programmes focused on circuit design, coding, and CAD designing using Tinkercad. More recently, the opening of the AI & Robotics Laboratory in August 2025 created a dedicated space for students to explore artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, digital fabrication, and other future-focused technologies in a practical learning environment.  Special appreciation is extended to Mr Venura Wijesekera, Mr Yasassvi Wijesekara, Mr Kaushitha Abahayagoonasekara, and Mr Yasintha Lalith Kumara, old boys of TCK, together with the Technotronic Futuristics team, whose expertise, guidance, and continued support made the workshop a valuable and inspiring experience for students.  The College also extends its sincere gratitude to Mr Wasana Dissanayake, Coordinator of the Trinity College Co-Curricular Engagement Initiative (TCCEI), Mr Chathura Subhawickrama, Master-in-Charge of the Technopreneurship Club, and Mr Subash Dhanasekara, Master-in-Charge of the Automotive Society, for their support and coordination in organising the workshop.  Special thanks are also extended to Mr Anuruddha Ekanayake, IT Manager, and Mr Sanjaya Rathnayake, Premises Manager, for their assistance with the logistical and network arrangements that contributed towards the smooth conduct of both sessions.  Appreciation is further extended to the PROMWEB Team, including Mr Shevantha De Silva and Mr Hirantha Madurasinghe, together with the Trinity College Media Unit, for their continued support in media coordination throughout the workshop.  – SA  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Trinity College Kandy (@trinitycollege.lk) View this post on Instagram A post shared by Trinity College Kandy (@trinitycollege.lk)

The Centre for Excellence recently hosted an insightful Masterclass titled ‘Get Hired on Paper First’, guiding students through the essential art of presenting themselves with confidence, clarity, and authenticity in their Curriculum Vitae (CV), long before they walk into an interview room.  The session was conducted by Mrs Judy Menoji Kalupahana, a seasoned HR strategist with more than two decades of progressive experience. She is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, United Kingdom (FCIPD), and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Sri Lanka (ACIPM). She currently serves as a Lead Consultant and lecturer in HR Strategy, Talent Management, and Leadership Development.  At the heart of the Masterclass was a compelling message: getting hired begins long before the interview. It begins on paper. A CV is often the first interaction a candidate has with a prospective employer and, in many cases, the only opportunity to secure an interview.  Mrs Kalupahana encouraged students to reflect carefully on their identity as candidates. She explained that recruiters look beyond academic qualifications, seeking a balanced combination of knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Success is shaped not only by what a candidate knows, but also by how they communicate, conduct themselves, and demonstrate their values and work ethic. Students were urged to take ownership of their personal narrative and present it with intention from the very first line of their CV.  She explained that a CV is a candidate’s first and most powerful opportunity to make an impression, often within seconds. A strong CV presents achievements in a coherent and purposeful manner, while a weak CV can appear generic, cluttered, and unfocused. Students were encouraged to approach CV writing thoughtfully and with the reader in mind.  Drawing from her professional experience, Mrs Kalupahana shared that recruiters typically spend only six to ten seconds scanning a CV. If the first impression is not favourable, the opportunity may be lost. She guided students through the shortlisting process, explaining how CVs are assessed against job criteria and why applications tailored clearly to a role are more likely to stand out.  In today’s recruitment environment, a candidate’s self-presentation must often pass through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) before reaching a recruiter. Students were advised to incorporate relevant keywords from job descriptions, maintain clear formatting, and avoid complex design elements that may interfere with digital screening systems.  Mrs Kalupahana also introduced students to the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in recruitment. She encouraged them to use AI-powered tools responsibly to refine their self-presentation while maintaining authenticity. Students were guided on the use of Canva for visually presenting their personal brand in suitable professional contexts, and Microsoft Word as a trusted and widely compatible platform for preparing professional CVs.  The session also highlighted the importance of holistic development. Co-curricular activities, leadership roles, community service, the arts, and sport, all central to the Trinity College experience, were presented as valuable aspects of a student’s profile rather than secondary achievements. Students were encouraged to recognise these experiences as meaningful reflections of character, commitment, and leadership.  The Centre for Excellence wishes to place on record its sincere gratitude to Mrs Judy Menoji Kalupahana for generously dedicating her time and expertise to the students of Trinity College, Kandy.   The Centre further acknowledges the guidance of the Principal and Vice Principals in supporting initiatives of this nature. The Centre for Excellence, under the coordination of Mr Wasana Dissanayake, looks forward to organising many more enriching sessions for students in the future.

Reviewed by Vidu Dassanayake of the Wildlife Society The Youth Wing of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of SriLanka, in collaboration with the Wildlife Society of Trinity College Kandy, conducted an awareness programme for school students at the Main Hall of Trinity College on the 24th of April 2026.  Awareness programmes were a segment of the inaugural City Nature Challenge (CNC) in Sri Lanka, which took place in Kandy from the 24th – 27th  April 2026.  The CNC is an international initiative that encourages people to observe, document and appreciate plants and wildlife in their own cities through a global collaborative field study held annually at the end of April. The Wildlife Society of TCK  was happy to welcome students from a few schools in Kandy:  St. Sylvester’s College, Mowbray College, Mahamaya  Girls’ College, Hillwood College, Gothami Balika Vidyalaya, Gateway College and Girls’ High School. Mr Pasindu Dilshan Abegunawardhana, the keynote speaker of the Youth Wing of WNPS introduced the CNC to the student community and guided them to download the iNaturalist app onto their digital devices in order to record the observed species of plants and animal life. He and his team explained the importance of identifying and documenting lesser-known species of flora and fauna, many of which often go unnoticed or unrecognised by the public.   The speakers from the  WNPS guided students on how to use the app correctly, following the guidelines and safety precautions that should be taken by everyone participating in this observation challenge. What made this challenge compelling was that anyone, from anywhere in Kandy, could take part and contribute to the initiative.  Another highlight of the programme was the series of nature walks organised by the Youth Exploration Society of Sri Lanka through several forest reserves around Kandy, providing participants with valuable opportunities to observe and document diverse species in their natural habitats. All the attendees engaged in a Q&A session with the speaker to end the workshop. Following this workshop, some members of the Trinity College Wildlife Society participated in the competition by visiting the observation sites.  They made several  verified observations on the iNaturalist platform, thereby  contributing real -world data to the global City Nature Challenge 2026 The Trinity College Wildlife Society is grateful to the College Management Team:  Vice Principal Mr Krishanthan Anthonydas and Mr Wasana Dissanayake- Director of the TCK’s Co-curricular Initiative for guiding them to plan the programme effectively.
