Ignition ‘22 organized by the 17th Kandy Trinity College Scout Group was held at the Junior School Grounds on the 5th of February 2022 in commemoration of the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the College. Initial planning for the event kick started in early January with a set date and place. The Senior Scout Troop led by the Troop Leader, Mas. Kulith Jayakody, was the driving force behind the event and the Rover Scout Crew providing assistance wherever and whenever needed with the Scout Master Mr. A.P. Navarathne and the Rover Scout Master Mr. D.H.M.R.P. Tammita guiding us and supervising us throughout. Extensive preparations began in mid-January with all sections coming in to play. The fortnight before the big day was hectic especially for the seniors with drama practices, decorations, souvenir production, site development and food preparations while the Cub Pack guided by the Akelas was rehearsing the Grand Yell and the Junior Scouts busy focusing on their performances. On the day of the event the senior scouts assembled in the morning and applied the final touches. As sun down approached the handmade fire torches lit up the Junior School Ground. Scouts, guests, parents and well-wishers gathered around camp fire. The event was graced by our Chief Guest, the Principal Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, the Vice Principal Mr. Krishanthan Antonydas, the Co-Vice Principal and Group Scout Master Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, the District Scout Commissioner Mr. Kapila Priyantha, the Headquarters Commissioner Mr. Sarath Bandara and other invited dignitaries. By 6.45 the fire was lit and so began the highly anticipated campfire. Mr. Ravindra Tammita, our Rover Scout Master, coordinated the highly entertaining campfire and kept the spark alive from the very beginning. All sections of our scout group as well as the invited schools, Hillwood College, Dharmaraja College, Kingswood College and Vidyartha College, presented their dramas and entertainment items most of which had a rather interesting twist. A song and a yell followed every drama keeping the audience involved. The Rovers and the Seniors jumped into the performing circle from time to time with their stunts and rib tickling stories. As the event drew to a conclusion after more than 2 hours as the red hot embers began dropping off, the high ranking seniors joined the campfire chief to deliver “Taps” to ceremonially end the campfire following which Mr. Marasinghe, our Group Scout Master addressed the gathering. With that the event was officially declared over. “Day is done, gone the sun,From the lake, from the hills, from the sky;All is well, safely rest, God is nigh.” Be Prepared. Haroon Aslam with a handicap level 2 became the first Trinitian ever to be named for the National Golf Team after his stunning performance at the National Ranking Tournament held recently. 19-year-old Aslam took to Golf nearly a decade ago and recorded his first victory in 2014, when he became the 2nd runner-up at the Victoria Golf & Country Resort Junior Golf Championship for Beginners. Currently he is an Advanced Level [IAL] student at Trinity. Since then, there has been no turning back for Aslam who has taken part in all the key national tournaments such as the SL Golf Union Open Championships, Royal Colombo Golf Club Competitions, Nuwara Eliya Golf Club Championships, Diyatalawa Army Golf Club Championships, Victoria Golf & Country Resort Tournaments, and many other championships organized by the Mercantile sector of the country. In addition, Aslam has also participated in championships held in Indonesia, Malaysia, and India, where he managed to secure winning positions.   Aslam’s success dawned at the right time for Trinity, where the College recently commenced its Sesquicentennial Anniversary celebrations with a solemn resolve to expand the boundaries of holistic education, in academics, sports, cultural, and extra-curricular spheres. Keeping true to the theme of the anniversary celebrations, “Duc-in-Altum: Exploring Vistas of Excellence”, Haroon Aslam has become a torchbearer for spanning the boundaries of the sporting ethos of Trinity College, Kandy.   We wish Haroon Aslam great success when he tees off for Sri Lanka.

Kick Off – The Trinity Tour

The Covid 19 Pandemic halted the usual routine of the whole world, and schools rugby in Sri Lanka was no exception. But the Lankans finally got a glimpse of 15 a side schools rugby back in action in the month of January, as the Trinity College Rugby outfit embarked on a friendly match series, dubbed ‘The Trinity Tour’. The matches were to be played by the 2021 rugby squad, as this was most probably the final opportunity for many senior players to don the iconic Red, Gold and Blue jersey while also giving the opportunity for new jersey winners to be a part of the legacy. The first fixture was against Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College, Kandy which was played on the 15th of January at the Pallekele Rugby Stadium. The team was led by Thidas Thanthirige. The opening half saw fierce competition between both teams, with the Sumangala edging a lead at the half time break, only to be relinquished of the lead by a mile as the Trinitians made a glorious come back for a convincing win of 46-14. On the 3rd of December 2007, Sri Lanka hosted England at Asgiriya for the 1st Test Match. This test match was remarkable since the Sri Lankan bowling spearhead Muttiah Muralitharan was able to achieve the world record of being the highest Test Wicket Taker (covered in the 1st Edition). Apart from that, the game was remembered by many due to numerous reasons. Following are few key highlights of the game. Sri Lanka’s tireless workhorse Chaminda Vaas’s 100th Test Match The match at Kandy also turned out to be Sri Lanka’s tireless workhorse, Chaminda Vaas‘s 100th Test Match. Vass was the third Sri Lankan to cross the 100th Test Match mark after Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya. At the other end of the spectrum, Vaas slipped under the radar in his 100th Test. The tireless workhorse though, made his presence felt by clinching five pivotal wickets in the game. Sanath Jayasuriya bidding farewell to Test Cricket in his own style The dashing Sri Lankan all-rounder announced his retirement from the national duties after serving the nation for 110 Test Matches, where he scored 8000 runs and clinched 98 wickets. Jayasuriya came out all-guns-blazing in the second innings of his last Test to essay an astonishing knock of 78.  It included him smashing James Anderson all around the ground for six boundaries in a single over. With Anderson pitching the ball up every time, on a wicket that was flat, shots rumbled through the willow of Jayasuriya. The ball kept rushing to the boundary ropes with lightning speed. Which eventually made Jayasuriya only the 3rd batsman to reach this milestone in Test Match cricket after the batting sensations from West Indies, Chris Gayle, and Ramesh Sarwan. Sri Lanka Winning the Test Match by 88 Runs The Test Match turned out to be a thriller contest. Matt Prior and Ian Bell played with determination, which seemed to have taken England to safe waters on the last day of the match. Suddenly, England harboured hopes of escaping from the defeat like they did in 2003 at Asgiriya. Unfortunately for England, and fortunately for Sri Lanka a clatter of wickets right at the end of the day’s play saw them drowning towards a defeat. The Sri Lankan bowling spearhead, Muralitharan, yet again provided the crucial breakthrough by taking the key wickets of both Bell and Prior. The Doosra he bowled to dismiss Prior would be remembered for years by cricket fans. Lasith Malinga had the last laugh when he dismissed Mathew Hogard with his trademark Yorker. England was all out for 261 and Sri Lanka won the match by 88 Runs. Kumar Sangakkara’s Match winning performance with the bat Kumar Sangakkara‘s 92 anchored the Sri Lankan first inning, and in the 2 innings Sangakkara scored his 16th test match 100, with that century he was able to score centuries against all Test-playing Nations, he was only the 9th batsman in Test Match Cricket history of 130 years (by 2007) to reach this milestone. Kumar Sangakkara went to on to score 152, which also made him the first batsman in the World to score 150 plus scores in every 4 consecutive Tests. These stellar performances guided him to be awarded as the Man of the Match. The Last International Match at Asgiriya Above all it was the last International Encounter at Asgiriya, Sri Lanka’s 2nd International Test Ground. The scenic and serene ground at Kandy had hosted 27 International Encounters since 1983. In fact, it eventually turned out to be the farewell game not only for Jayasuriya but also for Asgiriya as well. Even though the match was jam-packed with records, history, joy, and victory there were two unfavourable incidents to blight the game. One, the play was stopped due to a swarm of bees invading the pitch in Sri Lanka’s 2 innings, which forced the players to the floor until the bees got away from the ground. Two, the collapse of the iron roof on the Singer Stand on the last day, which ended up injuring four spectators. Sanath Jayasuriya smashing James Anderson all around the ground for six boundaries in a single over. Sri Lanka vs England Match Highlights, at Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium, 2007. It was on the 3rd of December 2007, when Sri Lanka hosted England at the Asgiriya Cricket Stadium for the 1st Test Match. This was a very special day for the Sri Lankan cricketing fraternity and especially for the Kandyan spectators. As Muttiah Muralitharan was inching close to a world record of being the highest Test Wicket Taker. On the second day’s play, the scenic and peaceful ground had suddenly transformed into a cauldron of bubbling tensions. The swelling crowd at Kandy waited with bated breath for its favorite son, Muttiah Muralitharan, to break Shane Warne’s record for the most Test Wickets. Murali needed just 5 wickets to rewrite the world record under his name surpassing the great Australian leg spinner Shane Warne who had clinched 708 wickets. He drew level with Warne when he had Ravi Bopara caught down the leg side on the second afternoon, but was forced to wait due to the rain interrupting the play. Finally, the reality-altering experience arrived when Murali, bowling from around the wicket, spun it past Collingwood to shatter his timber. In fact, the batsman had played down the wrong line, as he didn’t pick the delivery that went the other way, a delivery which Murali was renowned for, the doosra. As Kandy’s favorite son, Muttiah Muralitharan broke the world record, there was celebration all over the place. Firecrackers were burst amidst wild jubilation. The usually serene ground at Kandy had transformed into one big party. He set the world record in his 116th test match well before Shane Warne who claimed the record in his 145th. The commentator David Lloyd expressed this historical occasion, ‘’Bowled him, there we go,Great scenes here, History is made it has been a long long time coming. There will be great scenes here in Kandy. A world record, and it’s never ever to be got anywhere near.Firecrackers all around the ground. This game has come to a stop.709 wickets for Muttiah Muralitharan. The greatest ever wicket-taker in Test Match Cricket” David Lloyd 2007 was a very special year for the Sri Lankan cricketing fraternity because of Murali’s world record, and more importantly, it was the 25th year after Sri Lanka gained Test Status way back in 1982, thanks to the immense contribution by our very own late Mr Gamini Dissanayake. And, it was surely a special occasion for Trinity for two reasons. First, Asgiriya had the privilege to be a part of the world record, which no one has ever got close enough to challenge; and second, Murali was the home town boy coming from non-other than St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, a school that shares a cricketing legacy with Trinity over 100 long years. Murali talked about this historical occasion with gleaming pride: “I am thrilled to have reached the landmark in my home town with all my family and close friends in the ground to watch me — it is a very special moment” -BBC 2007 This particular game was full of records and history, all of it will be covered in the second instalment to this article. The Journey Through Nature (JTN) is a hike through a forest organized by the Senior Scouts and Rover Scouts of the College. This event takes place every four years, and this year it was held at Victoria Park, Digana on the 29th of February 2020. Junior Scouts and Cub Scouts also came along as they will have to organize this event in four years time. Girl Guides and Scouts from many schools round the country participated in this event. Some schools that participated were: Vidyaloka Vidyalaya and Rippon Balika Vidyalaya from Galle; Maliyadeva Girls’ College and Maliyadeva Boys College from Kurunegala; Kingswood College, Dharmaraja College, Gateway College, Mahamaya Girls’ College, Hillwood College, Girls’ High School, and Vidhartha College from Kandy;  Ferguson High School from Ratnapura;  St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya from Kegalle;  and Thurstan College and Ananda College from Colombo. The Senior Scouts collected sponsors and raised money for the event, with the College also providing a financial support. All the scouts were taken to Digana by College transport and it was a bit of a squash in the bus and some children weren’t lucky enough to get a seat. As soon as we got there, we were divided into groups and the hike started! There were many checkpoints in the route and there were arrows to show us the way so that we wouldn’t get lost. We had climb up steep hills and go down slopes, we had to climb over rocky terrain and hold on to nearby plants to keep balance. We didn’t see the red arrows that were marked on rocks and we got lost a few times but organizer came to help us every time we got lost.  The Junior Scouts travelled 10km, but the Senior Scouts had to go on even longer. After every group has completed the route, our lunch was provided. Then the teachers gave us some time to play before we headed back to the College.  Again, it was a squash in the bus when we headed back. After we got back, the closing ceremony was held from 7 to 8pm. All our parents came and it was very grand. There were lights everywhere and the teachers and Scouts had created a huge poster and hung it up behind the curtain in the main hall. They introduced the winning schools as well, from the Girl Guides section, the winners were Ferguson High School, Ratnapura and runners-up were St. Joseph’s Balika Vidyalaya, Kegalle. From the Scouts section, the winners are Thurstan College,Colombo and runners-up are Maliyadeva Boys College, Kurunegala. Could this be the best scouting trip of the year?
