As the captain of the 2021 Trinity College rugby team, I sincerely wish to express my deep regret regarding the incident which transpired after the Trinity-S.Thomas’ friendly rugby encounter on the 26th of March 2022. I am sure, both teams waited for a long time to play this match. I strongly feel that what happened after the match was so unpleasant and it should have never occurred. I sincerely regret it very much.It has been a learning experience for us as a team and as individuals, good sportsmanship and the values taught and upheld by our college should never be compromised whatever the circumstance may be. On behalf of my team, I extend my sincere apologies from the bottom of my heart to the referee, the match officials, the Warden of S. Thomas’ and the team, to our own Principal, staff and fellow Trinitians, old boys and all other members of the Trinity family for any breach of hallowed Trinity traditions. Respice Finem Tehan Karunanayake
The Inter House Rugby Tournament for the Junior Categories was held on the 2nd of April 2022 at the Trinity College Rugby Ground in Pallekele. These matches helped the coaches scout for upcoming young talents among the 300 students who took part in the tournament. The tournament was held under three age categories, namely, Under 12 Under 14 Under 16 The matches commenced in the morning with the boys showing great enthusiasm and talent on the field. Each game was critical for all houses, as a win would put them above the rest on the points table and give them a higher chance of winning the tournament. But with the afternoon approaching, the sky above the Pallekele stadium turned dark and gloomy. Soon there was a downpour; and the officials decided to cancel a couple of matches and awarded the winners based on the points gained by the houses at the time the tournament was called off. The winners of the tournament were as follows: Under 12- Pilcher House Under 14 – Sahayam House Under 16 – Central Boarding House Review by Abidh Jameel
“The passion of a Trinitian for Trinity College is unparalleled, the whole idea behind the sports meet, my dear students is to inculcate that passion in all of you. Sports at Trinity has a very different value. We have moved far away from the mentality of winning at any cost. For us, sport is a part of the integral formation that we intend to impart on all of you. Today is nothing but a celebration of what Trinity is.” – Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB Out of the hundreds of events that illuminate the Trinity College calendar, the Annual Interhouse Sports Meet is one that shines the most. It is a celebration of the school’s athletic capabilities and a tribute to all Trinitians, past and present alike, made special this year as Trinity celebrates it’s sesquicentennial anniversary. This year, we were blessed with the presence of Mr. Eraj Rajapaksa and his wife who flew all the way from Australia after kindly agreeing to be our chief guest. Mr. Rajapaksa was more than just a sportsman during his time in Trinity College. He was the athletics captain, Senior Prefect, and a very important rugby player. He is currently a client fund administrator for the Ebony Rose Group. The track and field competition took place on the 18th of March 2022. However the weeks leading up to it had been a high-tension battle between houses for points, from the road race to the heats to the final events on the day of the sports meet. Students as well as athletes had been competing amongst one another to win events and gain points for their houses while the teachers did their level best to support them and guide them to victory. On the day of the sports meet the 20 x 100m relays, the 4 x 100m relays were conducted for the under 12 to under 20 age groups, followed by the 100m dash. We also had a few of the more unique events such as the invitation relays, the old boys’ race, and the staff race adding colour to the event. At the latter part of the sports meet, after an inspiring speech from our principal and a very reminiscent speech from our chief guest, the awards were handed out. Here are some of the more anticipated awards from our sports meet. An article by Chaniru Senhas (Grade 8) Boxing at Trinity Boxing has traditionally been one of Trinity’s most exciting sports, both among alumni and students. The beginnings of Boxing dates to 1907 when only younger students were allowed to be a part of the sport. Since 1913, Boxing became a main-stream sport in college and many inter-house tournaments were held. Consequently, in 1914 Trinity won its first battle for the Stubbs Shield. Trinity boxing became defunct in 1962, but, it sprang back to life in 1975 with the trainers being Bobby Jayaweera, S. B. Kiridena, Leslie Handunge and Sarath Jayasinghe and culminated with winning the Stubbs in 1983. Sadly, the second death-knell was dealt to Trinity boxing in 1984 and was again revived in 2005 and continues to this day. Joe Louis of Ceylon Leslie Donovan Perera Handunge, better known as Leslie Handunge, who has been a colleague of Duncan White, was the only Olympic boxer produced by Trinity. He was born on the 18th of June, 1921 and he lived to an age of 100 years. He was one of the finest sportsmen produced by Trinity College.  After joining Trinity, he was guided by many coaches. He lived in Matale at the time. Leslie represented Garret House in four major sports: cricket, boxing, rugby, and athletics. His siblings too were well-known sportsmen and sportswomen in their respective fields.   Leslie became captain of the College Boxing Team in 1939 while keeping the family tradition as his father too was the captain of the College Boxing team. He was a multitalented athlete who also achieved a place in the National Boxing team.  Immediately after leaving Trinity in 1940, Leslie joined the College staff from 1942 to 1944. He enrolled in Peradeniya University’s Agriculture Faculty in 1947 to pursue a degree in agriculture, and subsequently won the Manning Cup for Best Boxer at the National Boxing Championship Meet the following year as an undergraduate. Leslie was also the Director of Physical Education at the University of Peradeniya. Leslie obtained a Diploma in Physical Education from the University of Loughborough UK and a Masters Degree in Physical Education from the University of Springfield USA. He gained his pride and respect by representing Sri Lanka at the 1948 London Olympics where he participated in the men’s flyweight event. In round one of this event he gained victory by defeating Guillermo Porteiro who was an Uruguayan boxer. Round 2 is where he was defeated by Spartaco Bandinelli, an Italian boxer. Not only at the London Olympics, but Leslie also participated in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was awarded Gold medal in round 1 by defeating Walter Tello, a Panamanian boxer in the men’s flyweight event. In round 2 which was a redraw, handunge was defeated by Dai Dower, a boxer from Britain.  Following his Olympic performance, Leslie enrolled in Loughborough College to pursue a Diploma in Physical Education, becoming the first Ceylonese to do so. At the age of 31, Lesie, who was also famously known as ‘Joe Louis of Ceylon,’ announced his retirement from the sport.  Gaining the essence from many past sportsmen produced by Trinity, Boxing continues to be a key sport in College upholding the values of leadership and teamwork. In Leslie’s own words: “So Trinity –Play hard, play clean,Do nothing dirty, nothing meanDo your best, you can’t do more,Play the game and forget the scoreRespect your opponents treat them withchivalryAbove all, maintain the traditions of Trinity.“ Leslie Handunge
