Junior Boarding Swimmers secure the game! 

A review by Chaniru Senhas (Web Content Team) The Junior School Inter House Swimming Meet was held on the 13th of October, at the College Swimming Pool Complex, with the participation of many young Trinity athletes. The participants showcased their dedication and swimming skills in a variety of categories, from freestyle to breaststroke. The event celebrated not only the thrill of victory but also the joy of sportsmanship.  The dawn staged upon with a set of junior swimmers, who, in a unique manner exclusive towards the sport, welcoming the special honourees, the Principal, Rev. Fr. Araliya Jayasundara OSB, Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Shelton Samadanam, Vice Principal, Mr. Krishanthan Anthonydas, Co Vice Principal, Mr. Ananda Marasinghe, Headmistresses of the Middle School and Junior School, Mrs. Krishni George and Mrs. Tissera, Mr. Samarasekara and the Prefect of Games, Mr. Uththiya Wijesinghe. After the warm reception, the National flag, College flag and the house flags were hauled up, which was followed by the opening prayer given by the chaplain.  As the inauguration concluded , the events commenced along with the length category. It was followed by a short recess and the invitation relays, in which Mahamaya Girls’ College Kandy and Hillwood College Kandy took part in the girls’ category, whilst Dharmaraja College Kandy, Kingswood College Kandy, and Chandananda Buddhist College took part in the boys’ category. The presentation of awards to the winners of the invitation relays was followed by the breadth events. The event was then brought to a successful conclusion with the presentation of awards to all the winners, the address by the Headmistress of the Junior School, Mrs. Tissera followed by instilling a sense of pride and patriotism towards the country through the National Anthem.  The placements of the houses are as follows:  1st place – Boarding House (302 points) 2nd place – Carter Reds (134 points) 3rd place – Carter Yellows (129 points) 4th place – Campbell House (61 points) 5th place – Carter Blues (49 points)  The champion swimmers of each grade are as follows:  Grade 3 – S.M.D.A.D Serasinghe (Boarding House) Grade 4 – R.M.K.G.V.D.B. Rathnayake (Boarding House) Grade 5 – M.M.A. Anfas (Carter Reds) and W. Pradeepan (Boarding House)  Our heartfelt gratitude is expressed towards the newly appointed teacher in charge of swimming, Ms. Anne Andrew, the head coach of swimming, Mr. Pemlath, the headmistress of the Junior School, Mrs. Tissera, to all the house teachers, the staff members of the Junior School, students and the Support Staff who contributed towards the success of this event. 

Stubbs Shield 2023  –  TCK closer to victory 

Trinity College’s Boxing Team has made a triumphant return to the Stubbs Shield, securing the 3rd place in this year’s competition. Sharing the podium with them is S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. Despite  challenges, Trinity’s boxers showcased their skills, winning 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals, setting a new milestone in the school’s sports history.  Trinity entered the Stubbs Shield event with a team of six boxers, as two had to stay behind due to injuries sustained during the Rugby League. Despite being short-handed, the team demonstrated their resilience and determination.  Captain Master Waruna Bandara led by example, exhibiting remarkable skill and spirit throughout the tournament. He faced a series of tough opponents and was eligible for the final.   In a stunning victory, Waruna outsmarted the Best Boxer Cup winner from the TB Jayah meet earlier this year, securing a Gold medal. His final opponent was no pushover, having already represented Sri Lanka in the Junior Asian Games.  Master Salman Faris, another prominent performer, clinched a Gold medal after an electrifying encounter that ended in a close three-to-two split decision. His valiant opponent was acknowledged with the Best Loser trophy, highlighting the competitiveness of the bout. Master Waruna Bandara and Master Salman Faris along with the Coach have also been selected to represent Sri Lanka by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka. Trinity Boxing Team for this year’s tournament acknowledges the commitment of:  Ronal Weerasekara Parakrama Sooriyabandara Ummar Bary – Bronze Medalist Ryan Weerasekara – Bronze Medalist Salman Faris – Gold Medalist Waruna Bandara (Captain) – Gold Medalist  In conclusion, the resurgence of TCK  to the Stubbs Shield after a 40-year hiatus is a testament to their dedication, skill, and indomitable spirit. Their achievements in the tournament and the recognition received from the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka mark a historic moment in the school’s sporting legacy, inspiring future generations of athletes. 

Juvenile Rugby Lions with a classy difference! – SLSRFA Under 16 – 10 A-Side 

Once more, the under 16 Rugby team treated spectators to a spectacular victory at the Pallekelle Rugby Stadium from 30th September to 1st October. This time at the SLSRFA Under 16 – Schools 10 A-Side Elite Rugby Tournament 2023.  The team emerged as a promising group of young gentlemen making their alma mater proud.  We acknowledge the commitment of Masters: K. A. S. A. Jayasena, D. M. T. B. Udakumbuka, J. K. Weerakoon, D. M. B. U. B. Dissanayake, H. Abdeen, U. S. B. Wijekoon (C), M. A. A. Shan, D. G. N. S. Kumarasinghe, M. Y. M. N. Yaddehige, D. D. R. Ambepitiya, M. N. M. Bilal, M. D. De Silva, D. M. M. I. Dissanayake, M. S. A. Muksith, A. Manzil, G. V. B. Karunaratne, V. V. Indusara, and R. W. A. Malik, whose team management and collaboration paved the way for a magnificent victory.  The Trinitians remained undefeated during the whole tournament. The invincible run started with three rounds on the 30th of September. Their first was against  Nalanda College. TCK  dominated their first game, scoring a daring 62 points to none, against the Nalandian outfit.   This match, gave the lions confidence as they went into their second battle of the competition  against Maliyadewa College, where they secured a commanding victory, scoring 34 points to nil.   The last match of the 1st day for the home team was played against Kingswood College. Towards the dusk on Pallakele Rugby Stadium,  Trinitians experienced a comfortable victory once again for the third time consecutively that particular day. The score read, 19 to 5 in favour of Trinity College.  The knockout rounds on the 1st of October commenced with Trinity facing the tough opponent from St. Thomas’ College. The match was contested brilliantly by both sides which provided just one score from Trinity. The scoreboard was in favour of Trinity, seven to nil.  The victory saw Trinity qualify for the semifinal against the worthy team of Zahira College. This match perceived the Trinitians scoring 17 points, to one conceded try from the Zahirian outfit. The match was in favour of the lions by a comfortable margin.  Jubilant Trinitians qualified for the grand finale against D. S. Senanayake College.  The stage was set for these two titans to battle it out for the incredible title in this all-island tournament. The finale started off great for the Trinitians, making big hits and breaking the defensive line. TCK showed exemplary defense as the opposition did not enter their 22 meters. At half time, no numbers were shown on the scoreboard.  Trinity however, showed promise as they managed to clinch a try in the closing minutes. The title-deciding try was scored with great set pace  and teamwork.   This success was a well-deserved one for Trinity but, kudos to D. S. Senanayake College for their incredible efforts and making it to the final. The Trinitians experienced the taste of double victory when the winger, Dimath Ambepitiya,  was also awarded the Best Player. Trinity extends their heartfelt gratitude towards the coaches and the teacher-in-charge for their exuberant efforts toward the tournament. 

TCK Cadet Band among the frontiers 

The All-Island Western Cadet Band Competition for 2023 was held from 18th – 25th September 2023. The Cadet Band  earned the honour of representing the college at  this prestigious competition after securing the 1st position in the provincial selections.  A team of 25 dedicated students proudly represented Trinity College and showcased their musical talents at this national event. Their unwavering commitment and hard work succeeded as Trinity emerged 1st runner-up in the 2nd Battalion (Kandy) and secured an impressive 10th place among the forty two contestants at the NCC training Centre at Rantembe.  Trinity Cadet Band were further recognised  in two individual competitions during the band camp. They secured 2nd place in the PT competition and claimed 3rd position in the Variety Show Competition.  Such outstanding performances were made possible due to the immense support received from the dedicated teachers, coaches, parents, and the school administration.  We would like to acknowledge and congratulate the students who participated in this remarkable journey:  Sgt. Back-to-Back Glory: Trinity’s Victory at Central Province Athletics Meet 2023 

Review by Muhammed Jameel  Trinity College Kandy’s athletic prowess was shone brightly at the 2023 Central Province Athletic Meet, held from September 5th to 8th in Digana. With a resounding victory, Trinity secured the championship for the second consecutive year, leaving no doubt about their athletic excellence.  The Trinity Athletics team displayed exceptional talent, surpassing the odds to defeat strong contenders like Walala A. Rathnayake Central College. This triumphant journey was expertly guided by the leadership of Master Umar Manzil.  Here are the notable achievements at the meet:  Under 14 Age Group Champions  Best Field Athlete – Master Raveesh Wijerathne  Under 16 Age Group Runners-Up  Under 18 Age Group Champions  Under 20 Age Group Runners-Up  These accomplishments stand as testaments to the dedication and hard work put in by Trinity’s athletes, coaches, and the Master-In-Charge, Mr. C. J. Kalugampitiya. With their eyes set on the All-Island Schools’ Champions, the Trinity Athletic team is primed for another successful campaign. As they continue to exhibit promise and determination, this new challenge promises to be a rewarding one for the college. 

Trinity’s Football Triumph in SLSFA Division II Group N 

Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas  Among the diverse sports in which Trinity College excels, football has recently surged in popularity across all three sections of the school. This newfound enthusiasm can be attributed to the remarkable victories achieved by the senior teams at the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association (SLSFA) Division II Group N games, held on September 11th and 12th at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium Pallekele. Trinity’s stellar performance in these matches catapulted the college to the summit of the league.  Trinity’s opening match pitted them against St. Anthony’s College Kandy, resulting in an astonishing 7-point victory. Vidumeth Dhammage and Akshee Mahadivulwewa each netted two goals, while Vevash Muraleedran, Shaan Althaf, and Uvan Vithanage contributed with one goal each.  In the second match, Trinity secured a resounding 2-0 victory against St. Sylvester’s College Kandy, courtesy of goals from Dev Karavita and Stephen Asher.  Trinity continued its winning streak with a 3-0 triumph over Sri Sumangala College. The next challenge came forth with Dharmaraja College, where Trinity emerged victorious with a score of 3-1, thanks to goals from Yevan Hulangamuwa, Dinusha Peries, and Viduneth Dhammage.  As the final whistle blew, Trinity proudly occupied the top spot in the league, amassing a total of 12 points. This achievement not only brought glory to Trinity Football but also instilled pride in the entire college community. It stands as a testament to the relentless dedication and hard work of the students who persevered day and night to turn this success into reality.  A heartfelt thank you to our talented players, and dedicated coaches for their unwavering efforts and contributions to our recent football triumphs. Trinity Triumphs at  Thrilling 6th Annual Table Tennis Encounter against S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia 

The much anticipated 6th annual Table Tennis Encounter between Trinity College and S. Thomas’ College Mt. Lavinia unfolded on September 2nd at the Kandy Municipal Council (KMC) indoor gym, delivering an electrifying display of talent and sportsmanship.  The Trinity Table Tennis team, which had exhibited impressive configuration over the past year, achieved a historic milestone by dominating all the age group events for the very first time in history of this prestigious encounter.  Within the under 12 category, Trinity emerged champions with a hard-fought 3-2 win over S. Thomas’ College. The under 15 division perceived both A and B Trinity teams delivering outstanding performances, sweeping S. Thomas’ College aside with a resounding 3-0 victory. As a result, they clinched ‘The Indra De Soysa Shield’ in a spectacular fashion. In the under 20 category, the Trinity team displayed their prowess, defeating St. Thomas’ College 3-1 to secure ‘The Nalanda Ellawala Memorial Trophy.’  Several  players made an indelible impression on their enthusiastic spectators.   Following this latest triumph, Trinity College extended their lead in the overall tally with the score standing at TCK 4 – STC 2.   This remarkable achievement will undoubtedly serve as a source of inspiration for the Trinity Table Tennis team and their dedicated supporters, as they continue to make their mark among the Sports at Trinity. 

Gymnastic Excellence: Trinity College Emerges as Runners-Up in Provincial Competition 2023 

In an exhilarating display of talent and athleticism, the Trinity College gymnastics team recently took center stage at the Sri Lankan School Gymnastic Provincial Competition 2023. With determination and skill, they secured an impressive second-place finish, showcasing their prowess on the mat. Guiding the team to these outstanding accomplishments were Coach Amal Rasanga and the dedicated Master in Charge, Kasun Marasinghe.  The Trinity College gymnastics team’s remarkable journey in the Sri Lankan School Gymnastic Provincial Competition 2023 stands as a testament to their hard work, commitment, and remarkable abilities. Rugby Thrills Galore: Royal College Colombo Clinches Victory in 77th Bradby Shield Showdown 

Reviewed by Chaniru Senhas and Rehan Anandakumar (Web Content Team)  The anticipation reached a fever pitch as the 2nd leg of the 77th Bradby Shield rugby clash unfolded between Trinity College Kandy and Royal College Colombo in the evening on the 5th August 2023 at the Royal College Sports Complex, Colombo. Enthusiastic rugby supporters from across the nation, as well as both schools, converged to witness this exhilarating confrontation between two of Sri Lanka’s most prestigious educational institutions. What followed was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both teams showcasing their prowess, determination and skill on the field.  An electrifying atmosphere with a fierce start With an electrifying ambiance setting the stage, the two teams entered the arena, amidst the uproar of cheering fans, ready to vie for the coveted Bradby Shield. Trinity College surged ahead, establishing a lead with a commanding 17 points on the scoreboard. Their relentless offensive onslaught, coupled with meticulously orchestrated plays, applied immense pressure on Royal College’s defensive line. In response, Royal College displayed their attacking acumen, securing 14 crucial points.  A Second-Half Resurgence As the second half commenced, Royal College emerged with renewed vigour and unity. Launching a barrage of potent offensive manoeuvres, they tested the mettle of Trinity College’s defense. A display of great execution and tactical prowess allowed Royal College to surge into the lead, amassing an impressive 27 points in the latter half alone.  Trinity’s Struggle and Missed Opportunities Despite their valiant efforts, Trinity College found it challenging to maintain their initial advantage. Adding a mere 3 points to their tally during the second half, they struggled to counter Royal College’s relentless pursuit of victory. A pivotal moment arrived when Trinity College attempted a critical conversion from an outlying position, a chance that unfortunately slipped through their grasp, marking a turning point in the match’s dynamics.  Intensity and Determination in the Final Moments As the clock neared the final five minutes, both teams were resolute in etching their names in the annals of the game. Supporters of Trinity College rallied to encourage their players for a comeback, while Royal College’s fans spurred their team on to stabilise their lead. The atmosphere crackled with tension as players poured their remaining energy into the pursuit of triumph, relentlessly driving the ball from side to side, aiming to breach the defense and reach the try line.  Royal College’s Triumph and Tactical Mastery Exceptional teamwork, and strategic brilliance displayed by Royal College came to the fore, clinching a well-deserved victory with a final score of 27-20. The spirited resurgence in the second half, coupled with Trinity College’s missed opportunities, underscored the pivotal difference in the outcome.  A Legendary Encounter and Future Prospects The 77th Bradby Shield rugby encounter between Trinity College Kandy and Royal College Colombo shall be etched in the memory as an enthralling and fierce contest between two formidable teams. While Trinity College’s early lead showcased their mettle, it was Royal College’s unwavering resolve and resilience in the latter half that secured their triumph. This victory adds another illustrious chapter to the storied history of the Bradby Shield rivalry, highlighting the exceptional talent and sportsmanship of both squads. Dominance on the Hills: Trinity College Basketball Clinches U20 and U17 Provincial Titles 

Review by Parinda Ratnayake  Trinity College Basketball teams have once again asserted their dominance on the hills, securing both the U20 and U17 Provincial Titles in an impressive display of talent and skill. The Central Province Championship, organized by the Department of Education, witnessed fierce competition at the St. Anthony’s Girls’ College Basketball Court on the 29th and 30th of July.  The U20 team reclaimed the Central Province Championship after a decade-long hiatus, celebrating their triumphant return to the top. Meanwhile, the junior U17 team continued their remarkable streak, securing a “three-peat” by clinching the provincial championships for the third consecutive time.  Facing off against Gateway College, Kandy, in the finals, both Trinity teams delivered stunning performances. The juniors left no room for doubt as they steamrolled their opponents, delivering an emphatic 54-5 victory. On the other hand, the seniors maintained a firm grip on the game, establishing a comfortable 38-15 lead in a low-scoring affair.  The U20 Finals’ Most Valuable Player title was awarded to Trinity’s Skipper, Master Senuja Godaliyadda, for his exceptional leadership and on-court prowess. Meanwhile, Master Savitha Gunawardane earned the same honor in the junior segment, proving to be a standout player in the U17 team.  The road to the finals was not without challenges, but the Trinitians displayed their sheer dominance in the semifinals. Breaking Records and Raising the Bar: Yasan Kavsidu’s Commonwealth Triumph 

Review by Muhammed Jameel  The Trinity Weightlifting team has ushered in a new era of unparalleled dominance, establishing themselves as one of the best teams in college sports. Not only have they clinched numerous victories in various meets, but they have also nurtured a formidable group of top-class weightlifters. Standing out among these exceptional talents is the remarkable grade 10 student, Master Yasan Kavsidu, who has soared to extraordinary heights, securing a collection of gold medals in his budding weightlifting career.  Master Kavsidu’s journey began in his youth when he diligently honed his skills, and the fruits of his labour were nothing short of miraculous. His exceptional talent earned him the honour of representing our country at the prestigious ‘2023 Commonwealth Youth – Weightlifting Championship’ held in the city of New Delhi, India.  The championship, which took place from the 12th to the 16th of July 2023, was hosted at the Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida. Master Kavsidu’s participation in this event was made possible by his awe-inspiring performance at the coveted ‘Junior Nationals’ meet in 2022, where he secured a coveted gold medal, solidifying his spot in the national team for the Commonwealth Championship.  Under the spotlight of the Commonwealth stage, Master Kavsidu showcased his remarkable prowess, competing in the highly competitive ’89 Kg weight class.’ Demonstrating incredible strength and technique, he achieved a Snatch lift of 78 Kg and a Clean and Jerk of an impressive 100 Kg. With a combined total of 178 Kg, he secured a well-deserved silver medal, leaving no doubt about his potential for future glory.  As Yasan Kavsidu’s exceptional journey continues to unfold, his humbleness remains a testament to his character. Representing Trinity College with pride and determination, he has shown that hard work and dedication can lead to remarkable achievements. With his silver medal at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Weightlifting Championship, Yasan has set an inspiring example for his fellow sportsmen at Trinity College. Trinity’s weightlifting powerhouse has indeed produced a gem in Yasan Kavsidu, and his journey stands as a beacon of hope for others to reach marvelous heights in their sporting endeavors. 

Lions Roar at Pallekele

A Review by Muhammed Jameel (Web Content Team)  The 77th Bradby Shield 1st Leg Encounter took place on July 22, 2023, at the Pallakalle Rugby Stadium, leaving fans on the edge of their seats. The long-awaited clash saw Trinity College emerge victorious in a thrilling match.  Led by a determined lineup including Thenuk Fernando, Dehan Watagoda, Senula Alexander, Venuka Kumarage, Ravin Illangaratne, Harith Samaraweera, Chamendra Dhanapala, Thisanga Dissanayake, Rushen Bandaranayake, Shan Althaf, Anuhas Kodithuwakku, Lakindu Herath, Sachindu Wansekara, Abidh Jameel, and Attab Manzil, the Trinity Lions showed unwavering belief and trust in their abilities giving a nail-biting encounter to all spectators.  From the moment the lions lined up in the tunnel, their passion and dedication to Trinity were evident. The game kicked off with fierce aggression, with Trinity initially pushed back into their own half. The Trinity defense was torn apart as the clear space left on the blind side was a gift to the Royalists. The ball was worked beautifully and the Trinitians were punished for the gaps in the defense line. The conversion however going astray. Despite the challenges, the lions strategized for more points and opted for a penalty goal, with young Shan Althaf taking the kick, but nerves got the better of him, and the ball went astray.  The Royalists fought back, executing a relentless ‘Royal rolling maul’ that threatened Trinity. However, the Trinitians showcased incredible strength, stopping the maul and quickly launching an attack with the ball in hand.  Mistakes and penalties came into play, but both teams showcased impressive resilience. The Royalists secured two tries, though the conversion was foiled by the unyielding wind.  Half Time – TCK (0) vs RCK (10)  Trinity had several opportunities to gain ground, but missteps and fumbles hindered their progress. However, they were awarded a penalty near the goalposts, and Shan Althaf redeemed himself, successfully scoring a penalty goal.  The second half saw the lions roaring with determination, ushering the Royalists into their own half. Trinity gained territory and looked set to score, but the Royal defense held them up, denying them a try.  The Trinitians continued to push forward, tantalizingly close to glory but encountering some setbacks. However, their determination paid off when the mighty flanker, Thisanga Dissanayake, scored Trinity’s first try, with Shan Althaf converting it perfectly.  As the Royalists chose not to risk another rolling maul, the Tuskers opted for a penalty goal, which unfortunately lacked direction and distance.  In the game’s thrilling climax, a penalty was awarded to Trinity in front of the posts. Shan Althaf seized the opportunity and kicked the decisive penalty goal.  With emotions running high, the final whistle blew, sealing Trinity’s 13-10 victory over the Royal Tuskers.  Full Time – TCK (13) vs RCC (10)  The Under 16 category saw Trinity continue their winning streak, securing a triumphant 15-10 victory over the Royalists.  Special thanks were extended to the coaching staff of the 1st XV team and the Under 16 team, as well as the National Kandyan Dancing Troupe for their captivating performances.  The support from the Trinity community, including students, alumni, faculty, and loyal fans, proved to be an invaluable source of motivation and encouragement. Their unwavering presence at the stadium and unwavering belief in the team added an electrifying atmosphere to the match, amplifying the roar of the Trinity Lions.  Beyond the victory, this encounter showcased the enduring spirit of sportsmanship, where competitors displayed mutual respect and camaraderie, reflecting the true essence of the Bradby Shield tradition.  As the Lions bask in the glory of their triumph and prepare for the next challenge in the 2nd Leg, the entire Trinity community stands united in celebration of this momentous achievement. July 15th and 16th, 2023 marked an extraordinary display of talent and determination as Trinity College took the swimming world by storm at the National School Games Central Province held at Digana Sports Complex. With their remarkable performance, Trinity College emerged as the undeniable champions, leaving their competitors in awe. Securing an impressive 755 points, Trinity College claimed the top spot in various categories, showcasing their unrivaled prowess in the pool. Throughout the competition, their athletes exhibited exceptional skill, unwavering determination, and true sportsmanship, earning the admiration of all. In the Under 20 category, Senuja Samarasinghe and S.J.S. Kumar proved to be a formidable duo, capturing the championship title with their extraordinary talent, adding yet another feather to Trinity College’s illustrious cap. The Under 18 champions, S.V. The Sri Lanka Schools Shooting Sports Association (SLSSSA) recently held its highly anticipated colours awarding ceremony for the year 2022. The prestigious event took place on the 7th of July at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) and showcased the outstanding achievements of young shooting sports enthusiasts from various schools across the country. Among the standout performers of the evening were five talented Trinitians who were recognised for their remarkable skills in the Air pistol category. The SLSSSA bestowed them with the coveted colours, symbolizing their excellence in the sport. The following Trinitians were honoured with colours for their outstanding performance in the Air pistol category: We congratulate these exceptional Trinitians on their well-deserved recognition. The colours award serves as a testament to their commitment and serves as a motivation for their future endeavors in shooting sports.

Trinity College Weightlifting Team Dominates All Island Inter School Weightlifting Championship

Trinity College’s weightlifting team once again demonstrated their unrivaled dominance at the All Island Inter School Weightlifting Championship, organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Weightlifting Federation. From July 1st to 3rd, 2023, the championship took place at Pilimathalawa Central College, where Trinity’s exceptional performance secured victories in multiple categories. In the under-16 age group, Yasan Kavsidu emerged victorious in the 81kg weight category. Continuing their winning streak, the under-18 division witnessed S.W. Angammana clinching first place in the 102kg weight category. Moving on to the under-20 category, Arya Solomons emerged triumphant in the 55kg weight category, while Abidh Jameel secured victory in the 73kg category. Senitha Karavita showcased remarkable strength in the 96kg category, claiming first place. Additionally, Sherwain Wavita and Hashendra Wijethilake dominated their respective weight categories of 102kg and 109kg. Yahadasun Ratnayake displayed outstanding prowess in the 109+kg category. In the second place positions, under-18 lifters Thisal Rajapakshe and P.D. Dissanayaka showcased their talent in the 49kg and 96kg weight categories, respectively. The under-18 division also witnessed F. Fazal securing third place in the 73kg weight category. J.L Peter rounded out the winning positions in the under-20 category, finishing in third place in the 81kg weight category. Master Yasas Kavsindu received the distinguished title of “best lifter” in the under-16 age category, showcasing exceptional skill and talent. With victories in both the under-18 and under-20 championships, Trinity College’s weightlifting team emerged as the overall champions of the competition. Trinity achieves 1st Runner-Up Position at All Island Ritzbury Relay Carnival 2023

The event took place from the 24th to the 26th of June at the Sugathadasa Stadium, marking a triumphant return for Trinity Athletics after seven years. Under the exceptional leadership of master Umar Manzil, Trinity College’s athletes showcased their talents and delivered impressive performances across various age groups. The under 14 and under 18 teams demonstrated their mettle, securing an outstanding 2nd place overall. Meanwhile, the under 20 team put forth a commendable effort, finishing in 4th place overall. The under 14 team’s accomplishments were remarkable, as they clinched 1st place in the 4 x 50m event and secured an impressive 2nd place in the 4 x 200m race. The team, comprised of Yumal Jayasooriya, Thevith Aluthgedara, Raveesh Wijeratne, Nabil Abdul, and Mintharu Ekanayake, displayed remarkable coordination and skill. In the under 18 category, Trinity College continued their winning streak with a 1st place finish in the 4 x 100m race and a notable 2nd place in the 4 x 200m event. Additionally, they secured 3rd place in the Medley Relay (short) and the 4 x 400m race. The team, consisting of Kaveen Gamage, Mohammud Atheeb Riffai, Hamza Sufiyan, Charu Dassanayake, Dhanuja Ellegala, Damrith Gamage, S. Abishan, and Tinuka Jaburegoda, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and dedication. Trinity College’s under 20 team showcased their abilities in a fiercely competitive field. They achieved 3rd place in the 4 x 400m and 4 x 800m races, while securing 4th place in the Medley Relay (long) and 5th place in the 4 x 100m event. Trinity College Emerges Victorious Against Vidyartha College in an Electrifying Rugby Showdown  

Review by Muhammed Jameel (Web Content Team)  In an intense clash between Trinity College and Vidyartha College, filled with penalties, rolling mauls, and turnovers, Trinity emerged as the triumphant team following a disappointing result in the gloomy setting of Bogambara last Saturday.  Trinity’s formidable lineup consisted of T. J. Fernando, D. D. I. Watagoda, S. H. Alexander, V. L. Kumarage, C. S. G. Dhanapala (Vice-Captain), R. V. Illangaratne, H. K. B. Samaraweera, T. B. Dissanayake, R. N. A. H. Bandaranayake, M. A. A. Shan, K. A. L. A. I. Kodithuwakku, J. H. M. L. L. Herath, W. M. S. R. B. Wanasekara, A. M. Jameel, and A. Manzil (Captain).  The game kicked off with a powerful start by Shan Althaf. Trinity dominated the gameplay in Vidyartha’s half, exerting pressure with their forwards and backline. A scrum was awarded to Trinity just 15 meters away from the try line, presenting the first opportunity for a try. Shan Althaf passed the ball to skipper Ataab Manzil, who dived in for the opening try. However, Shan Althaf’s conversion kick missed the mark.  Trinity strategically utilized rolling mauls during their lineouts, taking advantage of Vidyartha’s repeated collapsing of the mauls. After multiple warnings and a yellow card for Vidyartha’s No. 6, the referee awarded Trinity a penalty try without the need for conversion.  As the first half neared its end, Anuhas Kodithuwakku showcased exceptional strength by breaking multiple tackles in a single phase.  HALF TIME SCORE: Trinity College Kandy (TCK) – 12, Vidyartha College Kandy (VCK) – 0.  The second half began with Trinity asserting their dominance, pushing Vidyartha deep into their own half. Trinity earned a penalty and opted for a lineout. Another successful rolling maul followed, and Trinity’s prop Thenuk Fernando powered his way to the try line. However, the conversion attempt by Rushen Bandaranayake went wide.  Adverse weather conditions led to a series of missed conversions and penalty kicks. Trinity seized the opportunity when Lakindu Herath intercepted a pass and dashed towards the try line, but unfortunately, he was deemed offside.  Trinity’s grip on victory slipped momentarily as they fumbled the ball, allowing Vidyartha to score two unconverted tries.  However, Shan Althaf’s resilience shone through as he successfully kicked a penalty goal, securing Trinity rugby’s first-ever win in the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rugby League 2023.  FULL TIME: Trinity College Kandy (TCK) – 20, Vidyartha College Kandy (VCK) – 10.  Junior Age Group Results:  Under 12 team emerged victorious in all their matches. Under 14 team secured victories in both 10-a-side and 15-a-side matches. The Under 16 match was canceled due to deteriorating weather and ground conditions. 

Dharmaraja College Makes History with Victory over Trinity in Intense Rugby Encounter 

Review by Muhammed Jameel and Rehan Anandakumar (Web Content Team) The highly anticipated clash between Trinity College and Dharmaraja College Rugby Teams unfolded on June 17, 2023, at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy. The atmosphere was electric as players and fans gathered, expecting light rain but instead being greeted by delightful weather. Adding to the excitement was the presence of Fazil Marija, a prominent Sri Lankan Union player, who had been leading Trinity as their coach for over six months. The game kicked off with tension and intensity as the Rajans made a strong start, putting pressure on the Trinitians. This allowed the Rajans to exploit gaps in Trinity’s defense and score the opening try of the season, successfully converting it. However, Trinity refused to surrender easily, making quick adjustments to strengthen their defense, creating an uphill battle for both teams. Despite numerous scoring opportunities, both sides struggled to convert their chances. In the dying minutes of the first half, a penalty was awarded to the Rajans due to a Trinity tackler not rolling away, leading to an easy conversion and a score of 00-10 in favor of Dharmaraja. Both teams went into halftime hoping for a game-changing turnaround. At halftime, the score stood at 00 – 10, with Dharmaraja College in the lead. Following a disappointing first half, Fazil Marija’s magic seemed to have worked on the Trinity team as they had a blazing start in the second half. Anuhas Kodithuwakku kicked off the proceedings with determination. Trinity gained territorial advantage after a successful line-out throw, with Anuhas Kodithuwakku evading multiple defenders. However, they couldn’t convert this opportunity into a try. But fortune favored Trinity when a Rajans’ player received a yellow card, opening the door for Trinity’s first try of the game. Sachindu Wansekara executed a beautiful tactic, diving into the far corner of the try line in the 50th minute. Unfortunately, the conversion from Anuhas Kodithuwakku was off target. The score now stood at TCK (Trinity College) 05 – DRCK (Dharmaraja College) 10. Trinity’s resilience shone through as they formed a brilliant rolling maul just 10 meters short of the try line. With a series of “pick and goes,” they steadily approached the desired goal. The ball emerged from the ruck, reaching the hands of Shan Althaf, who took a daring risk by kicking the ball across the field. Abidh Jameel was perfectly positioned to dive for the try line, securing Trinity’s second try of the game. However, once again, the conversion was unsuccessful. Not even 10 minutes later, a poor 22-meter drop-out by the Rajans proved costly as Trinity capitalized on it. Exploiting the blind side, Trinity surged forward with the ball. Sachindu Wanasekara showcased exceptional speed, sprinting all the way to the try line and securing Trinity’s third try, his second of the game. Unfortunately, the conversion was once again missed. In a dramatic turn of events, the Rajans reclaimed possession from the kickoff and executed a beautiful chip kick. Trinity, unable to hold on to the ball, watched in despair as the Rajans stole it and dived under the posts for the final try of the evening. The conversion was successfully made. The final score read 15 – 17 in favour of Dharmaraja College, sealing their victory. Dharmaraja College’s historic win over Trinity College in this fiercely contested encounter will be remembered as a significant moment in rugby history. Despite Trinity’s spirited comeback, the Rajans showcased resilience and skill to secure the hard-fought victory.
